Chapter 01
Kansas Airport
Alex has gotten off the plane and picked up his suitcase and is now standing in the waiting area waiting for his mother Julia. The flight from San Javier has taken about five hours and Alex has listened to the cassette tape that his cousin Luna gave him and it has made the trip feel shorter. Alex has also tried his father's wrestling mask and he has smelled his father's scent in the mask.
Alex has been thinking a lot about Chupa and he would have loved to have Chupa with him but he knows that Chupa missed his freedom and his parents and Alex wouldn't have wanted to put Chupa through that. He knows what it's like to miss a parent, even if Chupa has found his.
Alex is thinking about telling Julia about Chupa. It's possible that she won't believe what he says. If she calls Chava, he can tell her that everything is true, assuming he hasn't forgotten what happened. Alex noticed that Chava seemed to forget things every now and then and that worried him. But luckily, Chava will be living with his family in Mexico, which is a good thing.
Alex is going to wrestle the bullies if they continue to bully him at school, but he's not going to wrestle them so hard that they get seriously injured. Hopefully, they'll understand that their bullying is over and that Alex can fight back. Alex smiles when he thinks about how Chava wrestled the man who took Chupa. What Chava did was right. Alex hears a voice behind him.
- Hi, there you are. I've been looking for you.
Alex turns around and sees Julia standing there and she looks happy as ever and Alex gives her a big hug. Julia sees that Alex looks very happy and content and she smiles back.
- I see on your smile that it was worth going to San Javier and meet your cousins.
- Yeah, it was probably the best vacation I've had in a long time. So many cool things happened.
Julia understands that Alex had a good time in San Javier and that it was a good idea for him to make the trip. Julia ruffles Alex's hair and turns her face towards the exit.
- Should we go home then? I've made food and I hope you're hungry.
- Sure. I'm really hungry. I,m almost starving
- Well, let go home then.
Alex and Julia go out of the waiting area and Julia has parked her car nearby so it's not that far to walk. She drives home while Alex tells her about the good times in San Javier.
- Did you know that Chava was a famous wrestler?
- Yes, I knew that. Your father Beto was also a wrestler. Your father got to know Chava and trained him.
- Chava gave me my father's wrestling mask. I have it in my little suitcase.
- Oh, you have to take good care of it. Wrestling meant so much to your father. Now you have both a nice photograph and his wrestling mask. If you want, I can make a nice collage and put it on the wall.
- Yes, please. I want you to. I wouldn't be surprised if Memo becomes a famous wrestler. He showed me several moves and we wrestled each other, but in an okay way of course.
- So nice to hear that you've done things together. How was Chava?
- Apart from the fact that he seemed a little forgetful sometimes, he was fine. He's going to live with Luna's mother in Mexico.
- So fine. I think he needs it. I always thought the farm was too big for him.
- Mmm. I think he'll miss the goats. Otherwise, it's probably just nice for him. Chava taught me a lot of Spanish so now we can speak Spanish together.
- Good. Then I can practice my Spanish like I was planning to.
- How have you been while I've been away?
- As usual. I've got a new boss who's giving me a higher salary
The car arrives at the villa where Alex and Julia live and they get out of the car.
Kansas Erting Road 5
Julia unlocks the door of the villa and Alex immediately smells an unusual smell and he wonders what it is and goes into the villa while sniffing with his nose.
- Uh, what is that smell?
- It's American food. It's ribs with sweet and sour sauce and various side dishes such as cornbread, coleslaw, sweet potato fries and small fried chicken. You said you didn't like Mexican food when we last spoke.
Alex remembers that and he apologizes to Julia.
- Sorry, I like Mexican food. It's just that... some students bullied me at school for my food and I felt sad. But it'll be interesting to eat this food, of course.
- Have you talked to your teacher about being bullied?
Alex shakes his head. He didn't dare tell any teacher because he suspected that the bullies would beat him up if he told anyone. But during the holidays, Alex has become more confident in himself since he has helped Chupa and today he wouldn't hesitate to tell anyone about the bullies. Julia understands why Alex was in such a bad mood when he came home from school before the trip and she sits down on a chair in the kitchen and Alex gets close to her.
- You have to tell the teachers so they know you're being bullied. Do you know the names of the students?
- I'm going to tell the teachers tomorrow when school starts. Billy is the worst. He and a few others bully me during lunch because no teacher can see what's going on.
Julia notices that Alex doesn't have his Gameboy in his hand and that surprises her because Alex has had it in his hand almost every day since his father died. She's curious why Alex doesn't have it in front of him.
- Sorry, but I notice you don't have your Gameboy in front of you. I have batteries for it if needed.
- Um..i gave it to Chava before I went home. I didn't need my Gameboy anymore. I used when things got tough or i was sad.
- It almost sounds like you've grown up while you've been away. I'm so proud of you. I suspected you brought it up when it came to difficult feelings.
- Chava said it was important to work through your grief and not run away from it, which I often did.
- Chava is a very wise man. It's good that he taught you to work through your grief after your father's untimely death.
- That's true. But you know what, we should probably eat before the food gets cold.
Julia nods and it looks like her eyes are watering now that they're talking about Beto. She doesn't have a single thought about the food, but as she starts to fill her plate, she feels hungry. Alex wants to taste all the food so he fills his plate with what's there and it looks like a buffet. The food tastes better than it smells and Alex's favorite is coleslaw, sweet potato fries and the little grilled chickens. Neither Julia nor Alex say anything while they eat. When both of their plates are empty, Julia smiles at Alex.
- Did the American food pass?
- Absolutely, it was delicious. But I also like your barbacoa. It's so delicious.
- That's great to hear. There'll be dessert later. I've made chocolate pudding and ice cream.
- Perfect. I was going to unpack my suitcase in the meantime.
- That sounds good. I'll tell you when it's dessert.
Julia starts to remove the plates from the table and put them in the dishwasher while Alex goes to his room. Alex takes out the cassette tape from the freestyle and puts it in his stereo and presses play. Luna has recorded a good tape for him and Alex is happy that the song "Pachuco" is on the tape. Alex remembers when they listened to that song in the car when they were looking for Chava.
The goat Pepito that Chava had bought was so cute and Chupa almost caught it and Alex laughs at the memory. God, so fun he had in San Javier. But it was also dramatic when he fell into the ravine but luckily Chupa had learned to fly and saved him. Alex picks up the feather from Chupa that he saved and when he smells it he can smell Chupa's special scent. Alex regrets not bringing the music box that Chupa liked but he guessed that Chava wanted to save it.
Alex looks at the wide shelf above the bed and looks for a good place to place the feather so that it doesn't get lost. There are lots of different toys on the shelf. Alex has several Ninja Turtles figures, among other things, and he has always liked them since he saw them in the cinema. When Alex looks at his toys, he sees a figure that is extremely similar to Chupa and he lifts the figure off the shelf. This toy is called Mogwai and is from the movie Gremlins, but Alex hasn't seen the movie. Beto didn't talk much about the movie, but he gave Alex this figure.
Alex studies the Mogwai figure and apart from the fact that it has no wings and is a different color and that its ears are bigger, it is extremely similar to Chupa. Alex has not looked at the figure very closely so he has not thought about what it looks like. Alex decides to put Chupa's feather behind this figure. He can attach it to the figure's fur but there is a risk that the feather will come loose and disappear. Alex puts the Mogwai figure back on the shelf and puts Chupa's feather behind the figure. Alex turns around and looks at the large photograph of his father Beto and he misses his father. Alex is sure that Beto would have liked Chupa if he had been to San Javier and met the animal. Alex remembers sitting on the bed and looking at the photograph before he went to San Javier. Alex has many memories related to his father.
Alex turns to his bed and starts to empty his backpack and he carries all the laundry to the laundry room and puts the clothes he hasn't used in the closet. Julia often packs extra clothes just in case. Alex unpacks his comic books that he brought with him and puts them on the bookshelf. He hasn't read a single comic book during his time in San Javier. Julia opens Alex's door and she seems to like the music.
- That's really catchy music.
Alex smiles at Julia even though she forgot to knock before opening the door.
- I know. My cousin Luna recorded the tape.
- She seems to have very good taste in music.
- The tape only contains Mexican music. If you want, we can practice our Spanish later. Chava taught me several Spanish words.
- That's great. We can do that. Dessert is ready, by the way. The ice cream will melt if we don't start eating it.
- Okay, I'll just turn off the tape.
Alex turns off the tape recorder but before he goes out into the kitchen he gently pats Chupa's feather and murmurs quietly.
- I miss you. I hope you're doing well wherever you are.
Alex goes out into the kitchen and eats dessert and he and Julia talk to each other about different things but while he's talking to his mother he's thinking about Chupa and what he's doing.
San Javier Mexico Dullac Cave
Chupa also thinks about Alex even though the young chupacabra doesn't know the boy's name. The rest of the chupacabra family is sleeping and Chupa should be too but his circadian rhythm has changed since he was separated from his family and Chupa has become used to being awake during the day.
Chupa looks at his sleeping family and Chupa's big brother is closest. His fur has turned brown/grayish and his wings are fully developed. Chupa wishes he had wings of equal size. The two parents are at the very back of the cave and they seem alert and move restlessly in their sleep but that's not so strange. That hunter intruded into their cave and both parents had to defend Chupa. Chupa remembers that night but it no longer fills him with horror. Everything is okay now.
Chupa closes his eyes and tries to sleep but it just won't work. There are so many inner thoughts. Chupa wants to fly to the farm where Chava and the children were but the parents probably don't want that. Chupa thinks he can sneak past the parents and fly a short round, just to check. Chupa gets up and starts to walk towards the parents but Chupa's big brother moves in his sleep and his wings stick out to the side which means that Chupa can't walk past his big brother without waking him up. Chupa gets depressed. He really wants to fly to that farm.
Chupa lies down and decides to fly to the farm when he and his parents are looking for food. Then he gets to fly fairly freely.
San Javier Mexico Chava's farm
Chava is packing up all his belongings and he is aware that not everything will fit in the new home. Instead of this big farm, he will live with Luna's mother and Luna and he knows that their villa is significantly smaller than this villa. In addition, he does not use everything in his villa so some things can be thrown away or donated, but Chava has a hard time deciding what to take with him.
Luna's mother Clara doesn't make it any easier because she wants Chava to finish the move today. Clara doesn't want to be in the big farm and she is restless and often asks Chava if he's finished soon, which he isn't. Clara's patience is starting to wear thin and Chava is afraid that she will take charge and decide what to take or not because the move is taking too long.
Memo's parents have promised to come and collect Memo's things but they haven't arrived yet because they live further away than Clara. Chava doesn't have to think about Luna's and Memo's things, their parents do it for them.
Chava is holding the music box he used when he lured Chupa to him and he is thinking about whether to keep it or not. Chava still remembers Chupa even though some memories have already been lost. Chava decides not to take the music box with him but lets Clara donate it to a second-hand store or something similar. The chance that Chupa will come back is small since he has now found his parents and is safe with them. Chava smiles as he thinks about how he managed to save Chupa from the mean man.
Chava is thinking about whether to tell Clara about Chupa and everything that happened but is afraid that she will be worried when she finds out what happened. Some of the events could have ended tragically, like when Alex was at the ravine. Luckily, Chupa had learned to fly and saved Alex's life, but it was still very dramatic. Clara hadn't liked hearing that Chava fought the bad guy, considering that Chava has a brain injury from being injured in wrestling. Chava decides not to tell anyone about Chupa. It must remain his and Alex's, Memo's and Luna's secret.
The bed that Alex slept in is no longer needed because Clara has extra beds when the cousins come to visit. Chava leaves the loft and tells Clara that everything there can be thrown away or donated, and she goes up to the loft while Chava starts to gather his winning paintings. He plans to save them. Chava is unsure whether to save the life-sized doll of himself. It's cool but he has no use for it anymore, but he plans to save the bluish wrestling mask. After all, it has been a part of his life.
Chava hears Clara turn on the music box and let it play and he looks up at the loft but tries to concentrate on his task. Chava is standing in the living room watching his old TV and he guesses that Clara has a TV and probably a VCR too so he doesnt have to take it with him when he move but he plans to save the videotapes of the wrestling matches. Chava gathers the videotapes and puts them in a box with things to save. Clara comes down from the loft and she only has the music box with her and she puts it in the box for things to donate. Chava looks at Clara.
- I'm guessing you have a TV at home?
- Of course. Luna watches a lot of TV. We have a bigger TV than yours.
- Then I don't need to bring this one.
- No. I thought of something. If you want, I can help you sell the farm as is. Then we won't have to throw away so much.
- You mean like a house with a farm already furnished?
- Exactly.
- Yes, that's fine. Then I just need to concentrate on what I want to take with me.
- That's the idea.
Chava points to the life-sized doll by itself.
- Will that fit in the moving truck? It might be difficult to donate that one.
Clara looks hesitant. She's not sure how much will fit.
- If it means a lot to you, we can try to get it included. Otherwise, I think we'll just throw it away.
- Well, I'll just have to bring my wrestling mask and the videotapes of the matches.
- But then I'll arrange so the doll end up in the dump.
- It feels a bit strange and abrupt to move so suddenly.
- It's for your own good. Luna said you can barely manage the farm anymore.
- Hmm. Will the animals be included for those who buy the farm?
- It'll be most easy for you and me if you let them.
- Okay, that'll be fine. Should you or should I write a for sale ad?
- I can do that. I'm good at that. Keep looking at what you want to save and take with you.
- What are you going to do with the music box?
- I was thinking of giving it to a family I know. They have two young children who will probably like the music box.
- Good choice.
- Are you ready soon? Maybe I can help you pack your things.
- No thanks. I have a few more things to pack, including clothes, but I'd be happy to do it myself. Hmm. I know you have plates at home, but I'm going to bring the specially designed plates that I won.
Chava brings a larger box and goes into the kitchen and takes out the special plates, and he puts soft paper between the plates so that they don't get damaged. This box should only contain things that are fragile. Chava also packs his favorite coffee cups but leaves all the cutlery in the drawers. Chava hears that Clara has gone up to the loft again and he leaves the kitchen and goes to his bedroom.
Chava brings a new box and fills it with the clothes he wants to keep. The other clothes are left in the closets. Chava also packs some special duvet covers. Chava is featured on these sheets and he thinks the pictures are colorful and he remembers when he wrestled. It was a special time.
Chava looks out the window and sees the long truck parked in the yard. It will be easy to bring the things he has planned to take with him. Clara's husband owns the truck and he is sitting and waiting in the driver's seat. Chava thinks it is strange that he doesn't go for a walk in the farm. Then the wait doesn't feel as long.
Chava leaves the bedroom and gathers the full boxes together and waits for Clara. Clara comes down from the loft and looks at the boxes. Chava nods contentedly.
- I'm done. I can take some of the boxes in my car and the rest in the truck. What's left in the villa will be the next resident's things. I don't think we need to throw away any more things than that doll.
- Hmm. The bed up in the loft looked a bit dirty. There were several bluish feathers in it. Did you let the chickens stay in the bed?
- Heh, no. They don't have feathers like that. They're from an animal that visited me sometimes.
- Yeah. I don't think animals should be in the bed. Not even if I had a dog. It's unhygienic.
- Maybe. The animal liked Alex and visited him when he was here.
- Mmm. Luna mentioned something about an animal but I didn't listen very carefully. Well, then we'll leave this farm forever.
- Yes, unfortunately. There are so many memories from here.
Chava turns around and looks at his villa. He's lived here for many years and he feels that he'll miss this big villa and the farm. But at the same time, he knows that the last year has been hard because he's suffered from memory loss and it's happened more and more often. The animals haven't been affected but he himself has been feeling bad. It got a little better when the chupacabra came into his life.
Chava and Clara leave the villa and Chava locks his front door one last time. Chava also locks the door to the storage room. Clara takes several boxes and goes towards the truck while Chava takes some other boxes and goes to his car. The boxes fit in the car. Clara picks up a few more boxes and the big doll and soon the truck starts to leave the farm and Chava drives after him so he can find his way to his new home.
Chava looks at his farm one last time and drives towards a new destination, a new adventure in his life.
San Javier Mexico Batted Valley
Another person who is also moving is the researcher Richard Quinn. Richard doesn't have to take as many things with him because he has rented the trailer he has been living in. Many of the things in the trailer are not Richard's own but belong to the company he works for and they will pick up their equipment when Richard has left the trailer. The company is from Los Angeles and that is where Richard normally lives.
But Richard has already decided not to return to the company. He is going to quit his job and hopefully move to another city. One of the reasons why Richard is going to quit his job is that he knows that his workmates will mock him. He didn't even manage to catch the Chupacabra cub. Richard has no desire to be humiliated by his workmates. Richard has also started to question his boss's way of working. No, it is better to change jobs even if it means changing his life.
The company Richard works for has booked a flight and the trip to Los Angeles will take several hours and Richard is already feeling restless. Richard is carrying two suitcases and they will fit on the plane. Richard can see that he has a luxury seat on the plane and that means that the plane seat can be tilted so that he can almost lie down and sleep. Richard feels tired and it will be nice to be able to sleep on the way home.
The big apartment in Los Angeles feels too big for him and Richard has long thought about moving to another apartment but it hasn't happened. Richard promises himself to move to a smaller but better apartment where he feels comfortable. In some way, it feels sensible to change both job and apartment. Change life in an instant. Richard is aware that it will be difficult at first but it only increases his determination. He wants to be psychologically strong.
Richard still has pain in his back after Chava wrestled him down. Richard regrets that he never explained why he wanted to catch the animal. If he had, they might have understood why. Richard had planned to save some blood from the chapacabra and then release it. Now none of that happened, but Richard still has several feathers that he has picked up from the ground.
Although Richard was scared, it was impressive for him to see the whole chupacabra family and he wishes he could have explained to them why he caught their cub. Richard feels stupid for not taking some blood from the chupacabra cub when it was in the car. It would have been so easy but still he didn't. Richard is close to blaming the high heat as an explanation for not doing it but he knows that no one will believe him. He was just stupid.
Richard throws away all the clippings about the chupacabra because he knows that no one at the company will finish his job. Even when Richard explained to his boss what he was going to do, there were doubts but the boss chose to let Richard go to Mexico and try to prove that he was right. Richard feels that it will be difficult to look his boss in the eye again considering this fiasco and it also makes him feel comfortable changing jobs.
Richard closes the last suitcase and leaves the caravan and walks towards his rental car. The company he rented the car from won't be happy about the damage and Richard is thinking about how to explain the damage. Maybe he'll have to pay for the damage. Richard swears silently to himself and starts the engine and drives towards the company where he rented the car.
Kansas Erting Road 5
It's evening and Alex and Julia are sitting in the living room watching the late news. Not much has happened in the world in the last 24 hours. Alex feels tired but he wants to be with his mother before he goes to bed.
Tomorrow school starts again and Alex feels both happy and worried about it. But the worry is not that big because he knows some wrestling moves. It's always a little anxious on the first day of school after the holidays but Alex is looking forward to meeting several of his friends so he focuses on that.
Julia looks at Alex and he sees that she wants to say something and he focuses on her.
- Chava called. He has already left the farm.
- Huh? So fast? He told me he was leaving the farm when I got on the plane.
- Luna's mother Clara hurried him and he thought it was a bit difficult.
- Chava can't possibly have emptied the entire farm since he dropped me off at the airport.
- Chava said that the farm is to be sold partially furnished so some of the things will be left for the next owner.
- Hmm. That explains it. By the way, on the subject of something completely different. Why don't we have any animals?
- You mean a dog or a cat? You haven't shown any interest in any animals and that hasn't been important to me.
- But can we buy a dog or a cat?
- If you want, we can, but not tomorrow. It will have to be later in the week in that case.
- Okay, that's fine.
- You look tired. It might be a good idea to go to bed soon so you're fresh tomorrow when school starts.
- I'm tired but I felt like sitting with you and talking.
- Oh okay.
The news ends and Alex gives Julia a big hug and goes to the bathroom to brush his teeth. Julia turns off the TV and starts turning off the lights. Julia is also tired and it doesn't matter if she goes to bed earlier than usual. Alex is finished in the bathroom and goes to his room and before he turns off the light and goes to bed he strokes Chupa's feather and murmurs quietly.
- Good night to you too, wherever you are.
San Javier Mexico Dullac Cave
Finally the rest of the chupacabra family wakes up and the mother does a check to make sure none of them are missing but they are all there. The mother sniffs the air to make sure no intruders have entered the cave but it smells as usual so there is no danger.
The mother thinks Chupa is more lively than he usually is but she guesses that he is happy to be back with the family. Also, he has finally learned to fly so she doesn't need to help him anymore. The mother has seen that Chupa has learned to suck the blood of goats so she doesn't need to help with that.
Chupa's big brother seems to be in a bad mood and the father asks what is wrong but he can't give a good answer, apart from the fact that Chupa has disturbed his sleep. Chupa doesn't pretend to know what his big brother is talking about. The father says that everyone in the family should be kind and not complain about each other. They were lucky and found Chupa and got him back.
The whole family leaves the cave and since Chupa can now fly, he doesn't have to follow the family, but everyone flies in their own directions to avoid fighting when they find food. Chupa knows exactly where he's going and he flies straight to the farm where the man lives. The man helped Chupa when he was separated from his family. Chupa's mother had damaged her wings and couldn't fly very well.
Chupa can see some of the goats that are in the farm but the lights seem to be off in the villa and also in the storage room where Chupa first met Alex. Chupa lands at the storage room and tries to open the door but it's locked. Chupa flies up to the broken window and gets inside and starts looking for the man and the boy.
Chupa enters the villa and looks around and everything looks different. Several of the things that were here when he was last here are gone. Chupa goes up to the loft where the boy slept but there's no one there either. The villa is empty. Chupa tries to understand why the villa is empty and he makes a plaintive sound that echoes through the villa. Chupa can smell the boy's scent on the sleeping mattress and he wants to see him again.
Chupa walks around the villa once more and he looks through every room but it is empty apart from several things. Chupa realizes that neither the man nor the boy aren´t here. The question is where have they gone. Chupa feels very lonely even though he has his family. Chupa makes his way back to the storage room and gets out through the broken window. What should he do now?
Chupa chooses to attack one of the goats and suck its blood because he is hungry. Chupa leaves the farm when he is full and he thinks about how he will find the man and the boy now that they are gone. Chupa remembers that he saw the boy in the plane when he flew past it and he flies towards the place where he last saw the boy.
Flight 49 (flying between Mexico and Los Angeles)
Richard is on the plane that will take him to Los Angeles and the plane has just taken off from the airport. Richard got a seat on the left side and has a window seat. Richard is tired and wants to sleep but has been given a seat next to a chatty Mexican. Richard tries to show interest in what the Mexican is saying but he is really not interested in what the Mexican is talking about. While the Mexican is talking, Richard thinks about what has happened since he left the caravan in Mexico.
Richard was able to return the rental car without any problems. It turned out that the company Richard works for had already done damage control and filled out a damage report and sent it to the company that rented the car. Richard only had to read through the report and sign at the bottom of the paper. Richard was impressed that his company was able to create a realistic explanation for the damage even though the man at the car rental didn't really believe the report. Richard left the car rental with a relieved heart. One less problem.
The car rental was close to the airport and Richard decided to walk. It took him 15 minutes to get to the airport. When Richard showed his passport, the inspector started to laugh at him.
- You're him, huh? That scientist who was looking for... chupacabras.
- Well, I don't know anything about that.
- Heh, I saw you on TV. Did you manage to find anything, eh?
- I can't say that, no.
- I thought so. Mexico harbors many secrets.
The inspector approved Richard's passport and let him in. Richard felt left out because the inspector had mocked him and he would have liked to hit the inspector but that would not have been a good idea. Richard went past the security checkpoint and was let in there too and he headed towards the waiting area. It took an hour before Richard could get on the plane.
Richard's thoughts are interrupted by the Mexican nudging him in the side and Richard almost gets a little angry at the Mexican.
- What? What do you want?
- Sesos. Have you eaten sesos?
- No, I haven't. Now, if you'll excuse me I actually want to...
- Ah. you have to go to Raster's market. They have Sesos, fried grasshoppers and..
- have some peace and quiet.
- the beer is super good. You have to try it. It's so fun to visit it..
- Excuse me, can you..
- and see all the visitors. Raster market is the most popular market in San Javier and ..
- calm down a bit? I'm tired.
- I always visit it and .. But what in the world is that?
The Mexican points to the window next to Richard. Richard has barely looked out the window since the plane took off, but now that the Mexican points to the window, he looks out. Just outside the window, the little chupacabra that Richard tried to catch flies and Richard is very surprised when he sees how close the animal is flying. The chupacabra seems to be looking in through the window and it seems as if it is looking for something.
The chupacabra flies further back but passes Richard's window again and Richard looks at it. The small wings seem to be working hard but the animal seems to have decided to fly close to the plane. Several of the passengers on the left side have spotted the chupacabra, but none of them have a camera available and therefore cannot document the amazing thing.
The chupacabra seems to fly higher and disappears from Richard's field of vision, but soon happy and curious exclamations are heard from the passengers on the right side. Both the chatty Mexican and Richard raise their heads and can see that the chupacabra is now flying along the right side while it looks in through the windows. There are many children on this side and they wave happily as the animal flies past their windows. Even the adults seem interested in the animal. The chupacabra flies several times along the windows on the right side but then rises into the air and disappears from sight.
It takes a few seconds but then the chupacabra flies again along the windows on the left side. The flight attendants have spotted the animal and they also seem curious about it. The chupacabra flies close past the window where Richard is sitting and it turns its head and stares straight into his eyes. Their gazes meet and Richard is sure that the animal recognizes him but it does not seem to be afraid. There are happy exclamations from the closest passengers. Several of the passengers discuss what kind of animal it is but none of them are right.
Richard knows what kind of animal this is and if he wants to he can tell all the passengers but at the same time he does not want to stir up any debate or make headlines and part of that is because he still feels like a failure. He did not manage to catch the chupacabra and now it is flying outside the window of the plane. If Richard had not been tired he would have felt that the chupacabra was teasing him. It is so close and yet so far away.
The chupacabra flies to the next window and the next and each time it looks in through the windows and it is obvious that it is looking for something or someone and Richard wonders what the animal is looking for.
After a while the animal seems to give up and flies away from the plane and all the passengers who have looked out and waved at the animal return to their usual activities. The Mexican sitting next to Richard nudges Richard lightly and he turns to him.
- Amigo, what kind of animal do you think that was?
- I'm not from here and I don't know anything about Mexico's fauna so I have no idea.
- It almost looked like a Mogwai.
- Mmm. But it couldn't have been because it is still light outside.
- Well, it was strange for sure
A flight attendant comes with food and drinks and Richard starts to eat because he is hungry and doesn't want to talk to the Mexican. The Mexican also gets his food and is quiet. When the food is finished, the Mexican looks tired and he tilts his chair so that he is almost lying down and Richard does the same.
Richard is tired and he welcomes sleep. Richard's last thoughts revolve around why the chupacabra flew outside the plane and looked inside. Who was it looking for? Richard can't think clearly right now and lets it go.
Outside San Javier
Chupa is very disappointed when the boy is not on the plane but he recognized another person. It was the man who caught him but Chupa felt no worry. Somehow he understood that the man could not take him.
Chupa has flown much further than he has before and he only sees blue sea below him but further ahead he sees land again. Chupa is aware that the boy cannot possibly be on the blue sea but maybe he is on land. Chupa is starting to get tired and he soon can't fly anymore but he decides to fly to the land ahead. Sometimes Chupa uses the wind and sails on it because then he barely needs to use his wings.
Deep down, Chupa knows he should fly home and return to his family, but he feels he has to find the boy first. Then he can go home. Chupa loves his family, but somehow the boy has meant more to him than them, and that's why he wants to find him. Chupa gets closer and closer to land, and there's a big forest at first, but there are several villas further on. A large sign says the name of the town; Guasave. Chupa is still in Mexico, but on the other side of the ocean.
Chupa can't fly any longer and makes an emergency landing in the forest. He's never been here before, and the surroundings scare him. Chupa is tougher than he usually is and explores the forest. It's not long before Chupa finds a deep cave, and he goes inside, but it turns out to be empty. Chupa goes deep into the cave, finds a good place to sleep, and lies down to rest his tired wings. This was harder than he had expected but hopefully the boy is in one of the villas and Chupa intends to explore them tomorrow when he has rested his wings.
Disclaimer: Chupa and the characters belong to Netflix.
