There's a specific point in the Qurie story where it's in the 'good' timeline and the three main characters get to connect with one another a lot. I can't go into how they get to this point but it's hard to explain. I just tend to draw this situation a lot:

Still there are emotions and feelings happening for Wallop that can occur at any time period, going on 40 years of feeling like a third wheel. Sure you know they're your friends but then you also don't want to intrude on what they are trying to build.
