Hello again! So I bet you remember my Hades 2 fanfiction/expansion idea, having an extra level between Erebus and Oceanus, the „Broken Erebus Chambers“.
https://www.furaffinity.net/view/57457812/
A short look back: In these Melinoe, would have to break seals by breaking the chains that powered them by finding and breaking their weak link. That would then allow her to flood a special chamber that served as airlock or diving lock that connects the Underworld of Hades with the Underwaterworld of Poseidon, granting her access to that Underwaterworld, despite her being an Underworld resident. The origin of that airlock was there being natural weak spots between the realms causing the tides to flood parts of the underworld again and again. Hades then ordered Daedalus to construct a device to stop that, but Daedalus did far more than that, creating said airlock. His vision was that there once might be travel and exchange of chthonic and aquatic Gods, atleast once Hades lifted the underworld isolation from the time he was trying to hide the fact Persephone had been with him in the underworld all the time. In order to prevent Hades from dismantling the airlock once he learned from its existence, Daedalus decorated it lavishly, grabbing Hades by his soft spot for splendor. Still Hades put a powerful seal on the device so it may never be used, even making it self regenerative. This allowed the airlock to persist into the future until Melinoe needed it to sneak into Tartarus with a detour through Oceanus to face Chronos, who had returned, imprisoned Hades and took over the Underworld. Of course, Hades and Daedalus could not know this beforehand, but their actions made Melinoe's battle with and eventual victory over Chronos possible.
But enough with the explanations for this AU, here is Tantalus! He is a character Melinoe could possibly meet when navigating the Broken Erebus Chambers, searching for the weak links in the power chains. His room is not only an NPC chamber, it doubles as fountain chamber. While he is forbidden from the fruits and water, Melinoe very well may have some, restoring her health. More than that, the water adds Max Magick, the fruits add Max Health, and with a pure share of each and a mix of both, there are 3 options to choose from, like any other boon or offering giver. The chamber is more a fountain room, than NPC room, as you only find it by chance. Naturally, like any other NPC room you may only pass if you talk to the NPC and accept their offering.
Generally spoken, Tantalus once was a friend of the Olympian Gods, but abused their trust by stealing nectar for his fellow mortals. Besides that, Tantalus commited the following terrible crime: Once he invited all the Gods to his house and they actually came. Tantalus then wanted to test the omniscience of the Gods: He killed his own son Pelops, had him cut into pieces, cooked and served to the Gods. Even when Tantalus did so in secret, the Gods noticed the deed when the meal was served and refused to eat, save for Demeter, who was not thinking clear at that point of time, still heartbroken with the disappearance of Persephone. Pelops was put together and brought back to life and had shoulder of him eaten by Demeter replaced with a piece of ivory.
Then Tantalus was banished to the Tartarus, where he was punihsed as follows: Standing in a pool of fresh, clear water and under the branches of trees with low hanging fruits, he was tormented by hunger and thirst still, for whenever he lowered himself to drink, the water was like sucked away and whenever he reached up for the fruits, the branches moved just out of reach. Also there was a rock floating above him, threatening to crush him. Also his bloodline was cursed for five generations.
So, why Tantalus? The first game had Sisyphus, a terribly punished ancient greek King, so why not include Tantalus, another terribly punished ancient greek King. Of course, there are Arachne and Narcissus, but they are rather cursed than suffering from eternal torment in the shape of creative punishment that involves constant, restless activity on their parts. Beside the parallels to a character from the previous game, the whole fanfic level is about controlling the water level with the airlock chamber. And who represents the up and down of water level better than Tantalus, who is permanenty causing the waters around to rise and sink, even if involuntarily.
Now, before I come to the specifics around this character, first I have to give credit where credit is due: The Hades 2 dialogue box template I have from a Deviant user named NuclearGhoul. The background is a mix of two ingame screenshots from Erebus and Oceanus.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
This version of Tantalus is a mix of a shade that shows him how he looked like in life and a Bloodless like Schelemeus. Especially his hands and feet are skeletonized and he lacks the flesh of his guts. Further he is twisted by both his monstrous thirst and hunger. His face and parts of his upper body are dried out and cracked, the skin of his face is shriveled, distorting it to a grimace. While he is a perpetual smiler, always trying be seem upbeat, his smile does not reach the eyes. His jutting rips look like teeth, and even his hipbone grew teeth like rips. He has his own theory on that:
Tantalus: Haha, no. This is indeed no standard anatomy for a mortal, and while I still had flesh covering those bits during my living days, I'm positive that I did not look like this underneath. I think I am slowly morphing into one of those goofy belly mouthed daemons.
Melinoe: Belly mouthed daemons? I'm afraid I don't know what you are talking about.
Tantalus: Ah, belly mouthed, eh, you know, daemons! I thought the underworld was full with the strangest monsters.
Melinoe: I indeed met a fair share of daemons, but I never came across a belly mouthed one. And I never heard about any. Though, I have not been to all parts of the underworld yet.
Tantalus: Ha! Then I very well might be the first!
Usually Tantalus can be found frenziedly reaching up for the fruits and then reaching down for the water in fast succession. He is ever doing so even if fruitlessly, at a quick pace like doing jumping jacks, with occasional breaks, where he tries to stretch further up to the fruits. He can also be heard cursing the Gods, the tree and the pond, but never the water and the fruits, atleast until he becomes aware of Melinoe. Once he notices her, he stops his frenetic activity and his rant and race, paying her full attention. This is partly because he once was a friend of other Gods and meeting Gods on a familiar and friendly basis comes natural to him. But he also wants no further trouble with Gods and Goddesses and tries to show his best behaviour.
As said before, he is a perpetual smiler, always acting friendly and upbeat. While he hates his curse, his hunger and thirst as well as the pond and the tree, he absolutely loves the fruits and the water, even if he never yet had a taste of them.
In fact, he is free to go, Chronos set him free, like Sisyphus. Of couse not personally, but by decree executed by his underlings Chronos set free about all prisoners or Tartarus, from which he also recruits parts of his legions. Tantalus however is so obsessed with getting a taste of the fruit and water, he refused to leave, even though the curse that prevents him from reaching either is still in place. In fact, Tantalus was so consumed in trying to reach the fruits and water, he never noticed how the Satyr servants of Chronos unlocked his chains.
M: You never noticed that your chains are unlocked? But somebody had to be here, unlocking them!
T: Oh, now that I think about it... there once was an instance I remember: A bunch of Satyrs showed up. I thought they were working for Hades, because they read out a proclamation of sorts. I didn't pay much attention. You know, I once was a king myself, so I'm familiar enought with proclamation. But when they got awkwardly close I was going to say something, but they were already gone. Seems like they unlocked my chains back then.
M: But that means you can leave!
T: Not before I had a taste of that water and those fruits, esteemed Goddess.
BEFORE THE FIRST MEETING:
Like all other fountains, Melinoe has to unlock it via an incantation. Unless the other, being named 'X Lifespring', this incantation reads 'Transportation of Cursed Lifespring'. Basically, instead of revealing a fountain in the Erebus chambers, because there just is no, you have to transport in one from another location via that incantation. As it then turns out, that was Tantalus's pond.
THE FIRST MEETING:
Melinoe is not too careful around strangers and quickly notices that the man is too consumed in his tasks to even notice her. The first time, she has to talk to Tantalus first, before he becomes aware to her. After that, he pays attention and when she comes closer notices her. He at first glance knows that she is a Goddess and refers to her as esteemed Goddess from then on.
T: But where are my manners? Would you like some water and fruit?
M: Weren't you just again and again trying to reach them without success? Won't they evade my grasp as well?
T: Oh, no no! I'm not trying to trick you. You see, I'm cursed, forbidden from this wonderful, fresh water and those marvelous, sweet fruits. But you are not! I'm positive that you should be able to reach them just fine. I only ask you... to describe the taste to me.
This then becomes the basis of their relationship: He offers fruits and water that heal Melinoe and make her stronger, she describes the taste, which Tantalus may never have himself.
M: Mhh, tasty!
T: I knew it!
EARLY INTERACTION:
Tantalus early on tells Melinoe that he thinks her a Goddess, but a new or young one for he does not know her. She is reluctant to reveal more than her name, but he cuts her short, thinking that she wants to explain her origin. Tantalus then explains that Melinoe seems familiar to him, and thinking about who she really is might take his thoughts off his terrible thirst and hunger for a while.
T: Let's see... golden hair, silver skin. A Goddess of precious metals? No. One eye red, the other green, meh. Your feet seem to be on fire. And one hand is sort of skeletal and ghostly... a daughter of Nyx perhaps? No, don't tell me, that isn't rigth.
Eventually he concludes Melinoe's origin:
T: Your eyes. I've seem before, together in one place, but not in your face. Your green eyes are those of your mother Persephone and your red ones those of your father Hades, right?
M: You know them?
T: I met them, once. When the Gods banished me to the Underworld, I still was brought before Hades in his court room. My fate of eternal torment was already decided upon, but Hades has the final say in whatever happens to a mortal after their death. And there they were. Hades, God of the Dead, and Persephone, the missing Goddess. What a surprise!
M: What brought you eternal torment anyway? Should I be worried?
T: Ah, that is a tale for another time.
GRAVE THIRST:
Tantalus somehow can sense it when your current weapon is having grave thirst.
T: Excuse me, but.. eh... your weapon. It seems to be... thirsty?
M: Indeed. It's a condition known as Grave Thirst. But how could you tell.
T: I know a thing or two about being thirsty, trust me, esteemed Goddess. And I just can't stand to watch anybody suffer thirst or hunger. Maybe I can spare some bones the next time I see you.
Upon this, he will offer Melinoe additionally a reward of bones in addition to his regualar offerings when you find him with one of your weapons having Grave Thirst, but only once per Weapon. After that he turns a little upset.
T: Melinoe, I have something to say.
M: Oh, what speak you mind. I didn't wrong youk I hope.
T: I'm not quite certain yet. You know, I have given you bones for your witch staff, your daggers, your axe and all the other weapons you wield.
M: Yes, and I am grateful. What exactly is your...
T: Those bones were for your weapons! And you put them in your own little purse!
M: I'm sorry, but... I cannot literally feed the bones to my weapons. I'm afraid there is a misunderstanding here. Grave Thirst helps me find more bones, which is a vital ressource to me, with the help of my Nocturnal Arms. They can't... drink the bones.
T: So their thirst may never be satisfied?
M: The Nocturnal Arms are weapons forged by the Goddess Nyx and the three fates to safeguard the Underworld. That is their purpose, and as I am helping them fulfill their purpose, they shall receive satisfaction. Besides, I do feed them.
T: Oh, and what do they eat?
M: Pure Nightmare.
T: Oh. Now, those I could provide, too. But I really don't feel like doing so.
More is to come on a second part.
