Gabald was a fairly large, but simple village. Size aside, there was little that differentiated it from other, smaller villages, save for its Autyon.
While not fully cognizant like most other Autyons, it's 'will' could be felt while in use. This would be Gabald's prized Guardian Dragon. But it doesn't live forever, and merely feeding it is not possible or needed. It required sacrifices.
With that of control, the Guardian can be steered. With one of perception, it can react and spot attacks no matter how fast or numerous. With one is needed to meld with the others tro ensure the sacrifice can allow the Guardian Dragon to live on and protect its people.
But there was, for a while, a lack of Yondards with perception and melding to be given to the Guardian, and there was concern over its incoming demise. Whether one haven't spawned for a while, or one did but never said anything, it didn't matter. However, a young Yondard was found to have what was needed to keep the Guardian alive; a little Yondard girl named Croakless.
Her fear in being thrust upon this was seen as nervousness over the joy people had that their Guardian would live (or convenient ignorance). But the child would soon dissappear. And, as such, the Guardian passed. Many feelings were had about its demise and the Yondard that left them to be unprotected. There was confusion and arguments over what to do next, and this would lead to the splitting of the village.
She was not so young as to not understand what her actions led to, but such a sacrifice would cause her to lose her own will. It was never described as 'death', and it truly wasn't 'death' in the normal sense. She would simply lose her sense of self and will and become part of the will of the Guardian.
She didn't want that for herself. And, as of now, she pushes it to the back of her mind. It was no longer her problem to deal with. But on her travels, there are some bridges she has to cross, so to speak.
