And your tears have been worthwhile
They got you through
To a different place and time where all is new
To the start of something fine
- Love Will Come to You by Poets of the Fall
Last year I designed a card for an ongoing card swapping event (you design or commission cards with your OCs and you can swap them with other people and build a collection) with Then and Vincent, my minor dnd character that I usually play in oneshots and the like. This time I wanted to do my main (or, well, one of) dnd characters, Cresc. Descendant of a once noble, — now infamous, — werewolf clan that used to live in the forest on the outskirts of Baldur's Gate. The clan had to scatter after machinations by a demonic cult and local vampire lords framed the clan for a tragedy that happened during one of the galas. Cresc's father travelled some and fell in love with a military woman out of Luskan and the two ended up settling down in Waterdeep and started a family.
Unfortunately, when Cresc was 9 and his little sister was about 1, their mother got summoned by Luskan high command to get out of retirement for an emergency. The family later received news that she was killed in the line of duty, which greatly shook the little boy. Not least of all because the circumstances around the whole thing were suspicious to begin with. No body was returned.
Diego, Cresc's father, left for a while to try and investigate but came back paler than ghost (which is already a testament, considering his pale grey complexion as a half-drow) and absolutely refused to elaborate on his findings aside that it had something to do with the wild lycanthrope issues Luskan's been having. Lycanthropes the world over were getting a bad rep ever since the incident in Baldur's Gate and this certainly wasn't helping things.
Nor was it helping a teen werewolf boy struggling with his identity, now more so, since apparently, the way he sees it, some werewolves must have killed his mother. A rebellious youth full of questionable decisions and anger management issues ensued. Usually directed at himself. Or Selune, seeing as lycanthropes in general and their clan specifically were supposed to be under her patronage, "her favourite lap dogs" as he'd say when feeling particularly cynical.
Thankfully, the boy has a decent support structure in his family, friends, and a good therapist helped him work through most issues. Healing is never linear, though, especially when the past rears its head and you realise things aren't what you thought they were.
