Over the week, I've been experimenting with some special effects on Pixlr involving rifts, and trying to make something that I've wanted the developers to add as a feature for years: A ripple effect. Every attempt I made to try and make one all have resulted in failure; that was until I decided to try out Krita. Long story short: I downloaded Krita, managed to find a ripple option in the filter menu, and saved the image with said effect and uploaded it to Pixlr to polish. So when I was done, I realized I've never explained how rifts worked in my storyline. That's why now, I've decided to upload this submission to explain to you the science behind them. Keep in mind, this may be updated in the future.
Quantum rifts/portals are the gateways that allow travel between other universes. They are created through a reaction that releases a burst of quantum energy that punches a hole directly through two or more different universes. When something enters a rift, they will be projected faster than the speed of light through the Intersection, the mysterious dimension outside of both time and space where every universe is connected.
There are different kinds of rifts that can exist, each with a different behavior, starting off with blue rifts. Blue rifts are formed when an object is caught within a quantum energy burst while moving at high speed, similar to the Delorian from "Back to the Future." When this happens, the rift will linger around and stay open temporarily before eventually closing and disappearing by themselves. In the storyline, the Nightwolf used these rifts to get in and out of the Intersection during missions.
Next up are purple rifts. Purple rifts are unstable versions of the blue rifts that are more dangerous. They are formed from a quantum energy burst that comes into contact with an energy surge high enough to overload it. When this happens, a chain reaction will occur, causing countless purple rifts to open up across other universes. These rifts gain a strong gravitational pull that draws all matter into it and scatters it across the multiverse. Unlike the blue rifts that can have their destination set, the destination of purple rifts are unpredictable, as they can open up anywhere, sometimes even in the Intersection. Inside the rift when traveling through the Intersection, the unstable energy present causes bolts of quantum energy to flash and strike all throughout the tunnel. When something traveling through the tunnel is struck by these bolts, it will temporarily cycle through variants of itself that may exist. These variants can be from a certain point in the past, present, future, or even an alternate timeline. After being open for some time, the purple rifts will eventually close and collapse into a deadly explosion. This rift has appeared quite a few times in the storyline and scattered characters, such as the Darkrune Defenders, across the multiverse.
Lastly, there are rainbow rifts. Unlike the blue and purple variants, rainbow rifts can be opened and closed on command using the right technology. It is unclear how they are made, however they appear to function similarly to the portals made in interdimensional Skycloudian technology. Blue rifts and purple rifts stay open temporarily due to the loss of charge. When portals made by portal gauntlets or interdimensional warp pads are opened, they stay open because they are constantly getting charged by the device they came from. As to how they are closed, an electromagnetic pulse is emitted from the device that disrupts the portal’s energy flow, allowing it to close. Despite the Skycloudian portals functioning similarly to rainbow rifts, they appear purple due to the presence of shadownite in the reaction. Despite not making an actual appearance in the storyline yet, rainbow rifts also grant direct access to the Intersection, unlike Skycloudian portals with their limits.
Extra Note: The multiverse is divided into different groups known as realms. A realm is a family of universes that each have a similar matrix between one another. For example, all Minecraft universes or Minecraft-related universes that exist, are classified to be part of the ‘Minecraft Realm.’
I hope you enjoyed this bit of lore I had to share! Like I said, I may update this in the future.
