Indeed. It's why we experience stories.
But yeah, I'm glad that youve illustrated the differing positions, though I didn't quite get that Joel doesn't understand why Kylar is marrying some woman. I do get Kylar but less on Joel but that's okay. The point is they're kinda talking past each other with the rain falling for heightened effect

Oh, Joel understands — but there’s nothing he can do except tell Kylar not to go through with the thing that’s upsetting him. If Kylar wants a relationship, Joel is basically saying ‘choose me.’ But of course, Kylar can’t, and that’s the impasse they’re stuck in. Joel’s frustration at the end is him grappling with rejection. He wanted Kylar to be more honest, but Kylar just… can’t. Neither of them are thinking all that rationally in the moment.
Joel does understand there’s risk on some level, but he hasn’t lived through Alder’s brutality the way Kylar has. To him, it’s a desperate emotional plea — ‘don’t choose a loveless marriage, choose me.’ He doesn’t fully realize that in Alder, choosing Kylar openly doesn’t just cost them status, it costs them their lives. So yes, he does understand to a degree, but not in the same way - not in the - saw the results of a hate-crime that traumatized me deeply ala Kylar. He's emotional and not fully rational here. It's a budding romance (or was at the time) , Joel wants to be chosen by Kylar romance wise.. he doesn't want to just be 'the secret' .
Kylar is choosing to protect Joel, even at the cost of his own happiness. Kylar wants Joel to comfort and assure him, but also for Joel to know why he's doing what he is with Marylyn.
It's.. complicated.

Well, he's mostly just been a student at university - he's probably lived there for less then a year.
Kylar has grown up there his whole life and is familiar with the military and culture more.
Joel will definitely learn the longer he lives there. Back in chapter 4 - in the chapter 6 flashback to that tavern, he begs Kylar to move when he sees the gallows outside and Kylar is more chill with it because he's higher up in society and feels he has kept their secret well.
Current Kylar with the prospect of a seat on the royal council thinks he can easily change the laws and culture under King Drayven's rule.. so he's kind of naive.
