Hippogriffs are basically gryphons that are half eagle, half horse. The old joke is that they came about because gryphons found that horses were good for more then just eating. A semi-tame hippogriff, Buckbeak, played a fairly significant role in one of the Harry Potter novels.
Dark looks kinda like Buckbeak, though he's a GRIFFON, not a HIPPOGRIFF, thank you.
