They only /look/ unprotected; they're actually covered by thin transparent gloves that provide the same mechanical counter-pressure as her suit while allowing for much more dexterous manipulations. The whole suit isn't made of the material because, being thinner, it wears faster and requires much more frequent replacement.

True - but rats' tails are a major part of their bodies' thermoregulatory systems, acting as heat radiators. It's reasonably plausible that in Dee's suit, the counter-pressure and insulation layers are separate, the latter being in the form of a removable tail-sleeve...
