This is Gus, Alfonzo's best friend. He was hospitalized in a motorcycle accident and had a near-death experience. He made a recovery and is physically and mentally fit for college but he did have a personality change. His favorite food for example was fried carrots, now he eats raw turnips. Instead of flirting with girls like he used to, now he ponders the meaning of life. He has trouble associating himself from his family because he feels his family is elsewhere, but he still cares about his family. Instead of riding a motorcycle he now drives a truck.
He is 23 years old. It's his freshman year. He used to listen to rap, now he listen to nature ambience because he feels a close connection to nature. He has a mother and a younger sister (she's in college too). His father is deceased. His hobbies used to be rapping and cruising on his motorcycle but now it is taking walks through the woods and dry-pressing leaves. When Alfonzo first met his sister, Rhonda, after meeting him in class. Their spiritual interests made them bond together. Alfonzo suspects Gus is a walk-in, Gus's original soul left his body and reincarnated during his near-death experience and another soul now lives in his body. Alfonzo has not told Rhonda because she isn't familiar with the spiritual realm and he isn't sure how well she'll take it. He hasn't told Gus either but he already told Gloria. Alfonzo wants to tell Gus but he hasn't found the right moment to tell him.
