This is a true story. It is only a page & a half, mostly because the details of the incident in question brought back things I'd rather forget.
Read it... take it to heart... don't do what I did.
OK, I need to ask this - can you even push start a car anymore?

Nearly died a couple of times. Back tire of a motorcycle blew out on a highway onramp (circle-shaped). I remember an instant of looking straight down at the ground and then getting up and wondering what had just happened.
There was a time when I was crossing a busy road in a new Saturn. Got to the last lane, saw it was empty and gunned it to get out of everyone's way. Only thing was, it wasn't empty. There was a Cadillac with an old man and a trio of dogs in that lane that did not know I was coming. There was a crunch and then the airbags were deployed. Saturn got shoved across the remaining part of the intersection. Cadillac looked little the worse for wear.
Flipped over a car on a hyper-powered motorcycle once. 2 second acceleration, shattered the illegally-turning car that had run the red in front of me. I went over the roof. If it had been an SUV, I wouldn't be here. Landed on the ground sans a shoe, standing upright until my stunned body fell backward and lay there until a bunch of military folks from the nearby air base came running out telling me not to move. That's where my back/knee injury comes from.
Nope. You do NOT remember that moment. It is a blank, followed by, "What the HELL just happened?" if you are lucky.

I got t-boned in a 76 Chevy wagon; fortunately the driver hit the pillion betwixt the doors instead of bang-on to the driver's door.
The car got pushed several feet sideways, but all I felt was a bounce and I thought the car stalled, until I surveyed the scene.
Another whiskey tango foxtrot moment.

Reading this reminded me of some experiences I've had. Yeah, they stick with you!
I'll summarize two:
1) Struck by lightning while crossing a university campus. (used a little of this on an earlier story, but I may put the whole thing to paper at some point)
2) New golfer swung and hit the ball at a funky angle from the tee. Drilled it into my head. Only reason I'm alive is because the golf ball deflected off of my tough-as-nails Nemesis-brand jobsite sunglasses. Otherwise it would have plowed into my temple. His friends freaked out: "OMG are you okay?" Me, being the smartass: "I'm Batman!"

Got a little bit too drunk somewhere, shall we say, east of here... Meandered in the general direction of the ship, with my trusty pizza compass well balanced in both hands taking me off course down an alley. Someone pulls the biggest machete I've ever seen in my life out, possibly wanting to alleviate myself of any financial burden.
...
I piss myself laughing and keep walking with my pizza.
To this day I'm still wondering how I got away with that. Still, someone out there was left thinking "how hard is he?".

I haven't bump started a car in donkey's years. We were tougher back then, and maybe luckier.
My guardian angel quit after I laid down my motorcycle doing 45mph because a pickup pulled out of a blind drive doing 5mph.
The bike wound up under the diamond bumper hitch in the back, and I was thrown and landed in front of the truck flat on my back.
I was out for 3 minutes according to bystanders -- actually saw the tunnel -- then got up, dusted myself off and I was "fine."
I walked over to the driver who had a death grip on the wheel, tapped on his window and when he rolled it down, I asked "Hey buddy, you OK?"

My 2019 Mustang will push start if there's a hint of juice still in the battery. Can't say if this works for non-Fords, but If you push the start button without pressing the clutch it turns on the accessory power only. If the battery has enough juice to do this, I can push start the car (with a LOT of help).
You did a lot of crazy stuff Vix, and I can't say I haven't done some dumb things especially behind the wheel, but I don't think I had any life flashing before my eyes moments lol. Not that I want to, I'll be happy to stay away from that.

*laughs... I'm glad you never had those experiences. They are not fun.
On a note from my time. Older cars had a generator. It produced electricity without the need of a battery, but after a while you had to change them out because the brushes would wear. That's why they changed over to an alternator (no brushes) but those have to have electricity to make electricity. When they go bad, it's usually just the rheostat (?) that the MFG kept inside the unit so you had to buy a new alternator. Growing up with a simpler form of machine, you quickly learned what it took to keep them running.

I found out first hand about the Volta effect from a 30A generator: I was working on a 1963 Corvair and grabbed the coil wire while the car was running; my hand locked up and I couldn't break free. Fortunately my mom was there and she cut the motor for me after I waved her over. It was a sweet little car, and simpler as you said. You could keep it running with hand tools mostly.
Reminds me of being backed into repeatedly by a fellow in a 90s SUV, because the driver thought that clearly the best course of action was, rather than stopping and waiting or checking, to just try and brute force is way through me. Then being told to fuck off when I, naturally, walked over to the driver side to tell him that he was inches away from committing vehicular manslaughter.
