The Toyota FJ40 is one of my favorites in this category of vehicles. I was thrilled to find this one from 1972 at the recent Smoky Valley Car Show in Lindsborg, Kansas.

It’s always extremely interesting to see imports from the era where it looks like they were designing to appeal to the market here, and how that eventually flipped to domestic makers taking queues from makes in Japan and Korea (My Chevy is a rebadged Korean).
There’s nothing wrong with any of this, not in my view at least. But seeing a very visual example of trends changing is always neat.
This Toyota for example looks a lot like it’s taking notes from Jeeps and other civilian utility vehicles of the time. The first generation Mazda Cosmo looks like a lot of mid 60s muscle cars, perhaps only slightly more bubbly.
In any case, I definitely got sidetracked here, point is: fantastic photo. I love the little textural details on each surface. It’s a big reasons why your closeups are so special. It shows these vehicles were made by people and machine together. Crafted in a sort of harmony in other words.
