Name : Niikalei Helmonna
Occupation/Title : Goddess of Alchemy
Species : Mawile
Size : Post-galactic (largest roughly eye sized to her) max ; Most commonly closer to planetary-star sized
Personality : Friendly, always seeking compromise and balance, motherly
Relations :
- Long time penpal with and now married to Nichaalas
- Mother of Kthaarae
- Ancient associate of Viktoria, Olsea, Jut, and Iridalea
- Friends with Yaarel and working with her to get Iridalea to relax
- Friends with Trorse and fellow gourmands
Abilities :
- Equivalent Exchange -
The chief underlying principal of alchemy in the Ynaaverse, as with others as well, is that of equivalent exchange. You take a certain amount of some set of things, apply a catalyst whether that's another material or energy (most commonly stars and uninhabited moons/planets), and it is changed into something else. The conversion is mathematically precise and repeatable and can be relied on.
This law of equivalent exchange manifests itself in Niikalei in a rather direct manner. If she or her maws eat anything, it is all converter into an equivalent amount of body mass. Said body mass generally gathers in the expected areas such as the chest, the belly, the rear, and the thighs. However, if enough is ingested, her body will grow increasingly dominated by the increasing body mass. Put another way, Niikalei begins to look soft, then pudgy, then plush, and continues onward in such descriptions of 'body weight'.
Just as Niikalei is able to convert ingested materials and energies into body mass, she is able to turn this conversion around and convert her excess body mass into various materials and energies. This most commonly takes the shape of new nebulae, stars, and planets. For example, consuming an ancient solar system who's star is nearing the end of its life and using this equivalent exchange to reform the star and its system into one that's fresh and new and ripe for life.
Background :
Niikalei is ancient. Not as ancient as Iridalea (none truly are), but she has still existed longer than most of her peers among the Demideities of the Ynaaverse. As such, she is also a part of the group of Demideities that achieved divinity wholly on their own.
Back on homeworld, Niikalei was an alchemist of unparalleled, world-renowned skill. Masterful in the creation of any sort of potion one could imagine and even in matters like the conversion of lead into gold. As a result, she was both massively influential and massively wealthy. Anything she wanted she could obtain through either her alchemical knowledge or the wealth and influence she had obtained. Thankfully for the rest of her homeworld, she did not allow this influence and wealth to get to her and she instead took on an almost motherly role for her entire people.
And yet... Despite her great success, she always felt there was something about alchemy just out of reach. Some deeper understanding of it that eluded her and which she couldn't put into words either. Years of experimenting and thinking and discussing, however, finally revealed to her the question she had been seeking for so long... Was it possible to use alchemy to convert herself into energy and then back into matter again without losing any of herself?
When she posited the question to her fellows, she was met with a great deal of reluctance and concern. Niikalei was, it turned out, not the first to consider this possibility. It could revolutionize transportation of both people and goods across the planet! And yet... How was she supposed to be able to remain whole and herself if she became pure energy? It had been attempted in the past and those who tried had never been heard from or detected again and had generally come to be regarded as taboo among alchemists.
Niikalei would not deny that there was a certain amount of ambition in her desire to attempt this herself... She knew the risks, but she also believed that this would be the greatest achievement in the history of alchemical study if she succeeded.
For years she prepared herself. Studying all previous attempts, pooling all the resources and influence her career had brought her into a planet-wide research effort to unlock the secret... Even with all of this, there was no certainty when the day finally arrived that she believe she was close as she'd ever be to a working approach.
On the day she was ready to perform her experiment, she had many of her fellows present to observe and record the results. She of course hoped that her attempt would be successful, but if it wasn't she still wanted to ensure that her people were left with as much information as possible to learn from the failure in the hopes that they would one day succeed in her place.
At last, the moment came and with a deep breath that she recognized may be the last she ever took... Niikalei provided the spark to begin the conversion of her body into energy. In a flash, she went from feeling the ground beneath her feet to feeling what seemed like both nothing and everything. Despite this, she took it as a good sign that she was still able to think and experience what was happening around her. But oddly there was something else she felt... She was pure energy now and yet she somehow felt like she was more than she had been even seconds prior. It was difficult to describe, but it was almost as if she were absorbing energy from around her and it was being added to her.
What she did not recognize at the time was that the energy she was absorbing was not just some ambient energy from everything around her, but more importantly the attention, adoration, affection, and more from an entire world of people hoping for her success. Both because of what her success could bring but also because she was genuinely loved by her people. How this took the form of energy she did not know at the time and never managed to fully explain.
Even in the short time it took her to comprehend what she was experiencing and that she was quite literally adding more energy to herself, the energy that was her being had increased nearly a thousand-fold and was showing no sign of slowing. She also quickly realized that, as per the law of equivalent exchange... This increase in the energy that comprised her being was going to have some sort of corresponding effect on her corporeal form when she reversed the conversion. Niikalei realized then that sadly there was likely no future to this line of alchemy. Yes, she had converted herself into energy and even managed to maintain her being. But as energy she was inherently unstable and volatile and it was far too easy to gain and lose energy indiscriminately. And she was still gaining energy FAST.
Working as quickly as she could in this unfamiliar state, Niikalei left a message for her people in a nearby computer explaining what she had discovered and the risks of further pursuing this line of research before then throwing her energy through an open window and into the sky and then into orbit. Unfortunately once she reached orbit she discovered that she was only gaining energy faster. Now not just from all the attention of her people but also from direct exposure to what's present in the vacuum of space, unfiltered by an atmosphere. If she was going to stop this and return to her physical form she needed to get far FAR away.
Niikalei could not explain how she was able to propel herself nor how she was able to so quickly, but propel herself through space she did. Quickly leaving her solar system and out into interstellar space. As she grew more familiar with this form moment by moment, she was able to gain a greater feel for the conversion ratio of mass to energy that she had experienced at the experiment's beginning... And only grew more aware of the fact that she needed to move much faster and get much farther away. From everywhere. With another thought she pushed herself to speeds that she knew should be impossible, and yet here she was watching literal stars fly by as she flew in a straight line in the direction she knew would eventually lead her to what she hoped would be enough open space to return to her physical form. Away from the bright and shining horizon of the galaxy's center.
Much sooner than she expected, Niikalei realized that the pinpricks of light around her were no longer moving and she turned around to see her entire galaxy before her. A breathtaking sight if she had been capable of breathing at the moment... But also quite small considering just how far she had flown out of it before realizing the stars were no longer moving around her.
Understanding that the longer she waited, the more energy she'd add to herself, Niikalei mentally performed the reverse of the steps that had converted her body into energy and almost instantaneously found herself back in her old, familiar body again... And somehow having no issues with being exposed to the vacuum of space. That confusing revelation was quickly overshadowed, though, as she raised a hand to reach for her home galaxy and found that she wasn't reaching towards it, but past it.
Thus began Niikalei's new life as one of the very first Demideities. As the centuries and millennia passed, though, she was joined by a slowly growing number of fellow Demideities of varying sizes and domains. Many ascending on their own like Niikalei had, but a sizable cadre also existed of those who had been risen to Nephilim Tier or even eventually Demideity themselves by the other Demideities. Usually as a result of excelling in some domain and being discovered and guided by a Demideity so that they could become their very best under said tutelage.
In this time, she found herself connecting the most with Viktoria, Olsea, Iridalea, and a strange being that wasn't a Demideity but wasn't Mortal either named Yaarel. The beyond ancient Goddess of Defiant Fates was rather aloof and kept to her endless vigil, but Niikalei often made attempts to help her relax and interact with the rest of the Demideities with Yaarel's help. The Mawile turned goddess didn't know the truth of who or what Yaarel was and knew only that she and Iridalea had some sort of history together, but that was enough for Niikalei to trust her. As for her relationship with Viktoria and Olsea... The Goddess of Order and the universe's head of Divine OSHA were a tad overbearing in their duties and domains, but Niikalei did feel a sense of friendship and commonality with them as Alchemy too had a strong degree of Order to it. A millennia-long goal of hers was to try and make Viktoria loosen up some, but she has yet to see much substantial success in that effort... (at least in the Ynaaverse's main branch)
Niikalei was a frequent and welcome, friendly sight among the various developing pantheons of the Ynaaverse, but she still kept a close eye on the countless mortal species throughout the universe. Specifically looking out for species or even individuals with alchemical talent that she could help nurture so they could come to better themselves and their worlds and peoples like she had so long ago. This hunt for individuals talented in alchemy eventually led her to discovering someone with skill and understanding of alchemy that rivaled her own back when she was Mortal. A Delphox named Nichaalas on a fairly remote planet that wasn't even aware of the existence of the Demideities yet. Though also oddly was the original home of her fellow Demideity, Lahr, back before Jut had spent a lifetime on break on said planet and married him.
As was her usual approach with nurturing the alchemical studies and talents of individuals like Nichaalas that she discovered, she began a correspondence with him. Never revealing the truth of what she was, but leaving breadcrumbs and hints for him to follow and advance his alchemical knowledge and experience. To the goddess' surprise, though... With every passing letter she was starting to realize that she also genuinely really liked Nichaalas and looked forward to his every reply. All the Mortals she corresponded with in this manner she appreciated on some level, but in Nichaalas she had found someone that she had come to consider a true friend despite never meeting in person. Eventually, though... This familiarity led Niikalei to accidentally slipping up and suggesting the use of an herb that Nichaalas had never heard of and could never have heard of as it was found on only one planet nearly half the universe away. Her homeworld.
Rather than trying to wave off her suggestion as a mistake of an herb going by a different name, Niikalei offered to bring Nichaalas a small supply of the herb. A reason too for them to finally meet in person. To this day, Niikalei is still not sure if the suggestion was indeed accidental, but she has never regretted it. She hadn't recognized it during their correspondence, but she hadn't just come to consider Nichaalas as a friend. She had begun to feel a deeper connection with the Delphox. Something she hadn't felt even back when she herself was Mortal, so focused she had been on her alchemical studies. And much to her delight... Nichaalas had been developing similar feelings.
Before long, Niikalei learned that even between Mortals and Demideities... The obvious can still happen between lovers. But when she had her daughter, a Delphox with her father's eyes, Niikalei also realized that her daughter would not be able to have the childhood and attention she deserved to have out among the pantheons. So she returned to Nichaalas and asked if he could raise their daughter. Rather than be upset she hadn't told him or worried about supporting a child, Nichaalas happily agreed and raised their daughter, Kthaarae, well.
Over the next 30 years, Niikalei and Nichaalas continued their correspondence, but never met in person again. Still both having deep feelings for each other, but hesitant to express those feelings. Nichaalas often gushed about Kthaarae's achievements and this pleased Niikalei greatly to know that her daughter was living a good life. So much better than she believed she could have given her.
Eventually, though, Kthaarae experienced her own ascension. The result of an extremely powerful spell to push her size below her natural base height (a barrier she had never been able to break through as it was the representation of her up to then unknown and dormant domain). But more importantly than the spell alone being extremely powerful, she had also further reinforced the strength of the spellwork with reagents and ink made with flakes from a Shard. Before she knew what was going on, Kthaarae was outgrowing her home, her continent, her planet, her solar system... Eventually even managing what only one other before her had managed and outgrowing the whole of the universe and officially becoming not just a Demideity, but a full fledged Deity.
Some time after as Kthaarae started coming into her own and learning her new obligations as a Deity, she met Niikalei for the first time. Kthaarae did not know that Niikalei was her mother and Niikalei was unsure if she should reveal that truth, so she decided not to reveal it. However, on returning home to visit her father and explain what had happened to him, Kthaarae also talked about meeting the Goddess of Alchemy (her father was a world-renowned alchemist, after all, so he'd naturally be interested in learning there was such a goddess) and offhandedly mentioned her name was Niikalei. The name of the woman who just so happened to be Kthaarae's mother and who Nichaalas had been talking with via letters for nearly 40 years.
At Kthaarae's insistence, Niikalei and Nichaalas finally met in person again and the three talked and talked and talked. Trying to fit over 30 years of life into a single night. The Mawile and the Delphox quickly came to realize that their feelings for each other were just as strong as they had always been and it didn't take long after for Nichaalas to propose and finally make their decades-long relationship official. The two had loved each other for decades, but couldn't truly admit it to each other until their daughter brought them back face to face again.
While Nichaalas continues with his life on Yiigaara much as he always has and Niikalei continues her Demideific duties around the universe, the two always make sure they spend at least part of the day together. Whether that involved Nichaalas finding himself brought along to a pantheon by Niikalei to meet some of her 'coworkers' or Niikalei going down to Nichaalas' house on Yiigaara for the night.
Much like that question she was trying to find so many many many thousands of years prior, that itch in her mind telling her that there was a question she needed to answer but didn't know what the question was... For much of her life as a Demideity there was another itch in the back of her mind, an itch deep in her soul telling her that there was something she was missing. Something that she wanted and yet she could not put words to or even fully determine what it was. With Nichaalas and Kthaarae both she finally figured out what that missing something was.
Finally have a reference of Niikalei that I'm happy with!
Admittedly, I actually did this version of her last year sometime and forgot to write up her lore post and so she's been waiting to go up ^^;
As for Niikalei's initial origin... Okay so there may have been some Fullmetal Alchemist influence there along with my watching Star Trek lately and it clicking that in a way the teleporters are technological alchemy converting matter into energy and back XD
This has also been an opportunity for me to lay down a-bit more of the lore around the Demideities that didn't ascend through being empowered by Shards.

An excellent view into some of the history of your setting! And a lovely tale for the life (so far) of magnificent Mawile Niikalei <3
Have we seen her at work converting energy back into matter yet?
When she was absorbing affection and attention to grow as energy- was that a one-time event that ended when she went physical again, or is she one of the rare Ynaaverse divines who gains power still from praise and devotion?

Nope not in art yet, though that'll be something to try and figure out... Have thought a-few times about her maws breathing out nebulae was a possibility, but that's just one c.c
I'm thinking that was a one-time event. The combination of turning herself into pure energy and already being such a beloved figure on her homeworld ended up meaning that she absorbed all that "emotional energy" so to speak. It only worked on her because of the fact that she was entirely energy for that time and it just added to her.
