"I always complained about the lack of excitement in my life, I had no idea I was cursing myself into a nightmare...due my low grades in the College of mages I was relegated to the duty of court mage of a minor duke in a backwater village, my routine was beyond boring, nothing ever happened on that shithole...at least nothing until the long night, I heard rumors of entire towns being razed by the nightmare creatures and the cult of pain, but I would never imagine our irrelevant village was on their target list.
Seven nights ago I woke up with the rumble of a cannon being fired against our pathetic wooden gates, seconds later the town was being swarmed by nightmare creatures, the militia tried to make a stand but they got swarmed and ripped apart, I fired as many spells as I could in the tide of monsters but they were so many that it barely had any effect, so I ran with the other survivors to the church in the hopes it could withstand the onslaught.
The heavy wooden doors of the church resisted less than half an hour, the bravest survivors choose to barricade themselves and hold the nightmares while the rest of us escaped trough the underground catacomb tunnels, once we found an exit we ran desperately until the sun was rising, we were 13 survivors at this point, we decided to march to the neighboring village looking for help, but their situation was no diferent, the entire village was destroyed, terrificaly mangled corpses lied all over the place, we looted the all weapons and supplies we could carry and continued our journey trough the old road.
Our second night was another nightmare, the sun set before we could shelter ourselves, we hid in the ruins of a farmhouse as a group of cultists surrounded us, we fought desperately the entire night...by the sunrise we were only 7 survivors, the group named me the leader since I was a mage, a responsability I loathe, but I had no choice, tried my best to keep everyone alive as we marched, but I'm not a natural leader and its so hard to deal with stupid stubborn peasants...we lost someone almost everyday, I dont remember any of their names but their gruesome deaths will never stop to haunt my dreams.
Tonight there is only 3 of us, me, Robert and Ana...my two companions are a couple from the village, he was a militia guard and she a seamstress...they are roughly more intelligent than a door, I despise both of them, the survivor instinct on me is begging me to leave both to die, Robert is barely competent enough to hold a spear and Ana is heavily pregnant with a litter of brats, they are slowing me down tremendously since we have to drag Ana's bloated body on a small cart...but they are good people and they dont deserve to die...
They are deeply traumatized and defeated, it's hard to keep them going...for the last days we been walking aimlessly looking for shelter but now I have a clear direction to go, I can see a bright lit magical beacon on the horizon, its the mages college calling, I can sense the words in the wind, they are gathering in the Black Oak fortress, they are fighting back against the cult and they are summoning any magical user that can help...so there is hope, I just need to drag these two losers to the fortress and not die in the process!"
