ARA - Glimpse of Youth - Nuka Song
“Well, I think it’s a little rude for people to say I’m using steroids when we all have to get tested for drugs to get approval to race.” Nuka Song protested.
The tall, and now moderately curvy woman, was seated on a plastic bench. The crowd was outside, located at a rest area positioned just outside the Carters Island Garage. Ms. Song had only just finished a race no more than a half hour ago, completing five laps and earning second place. The Botany Bay Race Course in Sydney Australia was known for its claustrophobia enduing twists and turns, being one of the few tracks on Earth that not only was subterranean, but also completely under water.
Only the starting line was located above ground, the Garage and Facilities all located topside on Carters Island with the entire tubular glass track run into the Bay and through solid ground. The dark interior of the tubes were dimly lit and required expert reflexes. Rookies weren’t allowed to drive this racetrack, only the professionals with five or more years of racing experience that had earned and maintained at least a rank of Silver.
“You aren’t wrong about the testing, but the average person doesn’t think about that. Steroid use is still common in weigh lifting and other sprots, so you stand out more than most drivers in the Association.” The female reporter replied, her voice thick with an Australian accent.
Ms. Song took a long drag from her water bottle, then flipped open her phone to check it.
“Maybe, but I pass all my tests, I’m just working out and changing my diet.” Ms. Song said in reply.
“Ms. Song, after your previous race in Maine, you are reported as having complained about the Velvet Dream. Are you planning to a change in bikes?” Another reporter spoke up, thrusting out his microphone to get it closest to where Nuka was seated.
She was still checking her phone, enjoying the sunlight, and surrounded by a crowd of about thirteen reporters and their cameras.
“No, I’m not changing my bike. I haven’t stopped dreaming yet.” She replied, still looking at her phone screen.
She had numerous text updates, most were trash. All the important stuff she left to her Crew. The only texts she was worried about were from people she was close to. She smiled when she read an update for a good friend of hers. It wasn’t a text from him but was a progress report on one of his races. He’d just earned fourth in a race on Titan. That was great!
He needed a good win; she’d have to look up the footage when she got back to her hotel room.
“Ms. Song, what about Olympus Mechanics? There’re rumors that you are going to sign a sponsorship deal with them next year!” Another reporter asked, and she froze her smile.
“No, I’m still driving the Velvet Dream. I’m not changing bikes.” She replied in a deadpan, still scrolling her phone, then wet her whistle with another swig from her water bottle.
She was planning on changing her bike, and she was planning on taking a deal from Olympus Mechanics. How a random aussie reporter knew that was something she didn’t know. Someone must be leaking info, but she was sure it wasn’t anyone on her team since only three people knew what she was planning, and she was the third person.
“If you were to change bikes what sort of performance would be looking for!” A fourth voice shouted from the crowd, mic in hand.
“Why would you be leaving Dwight and Bright? Do you have a reason, Ms. Song?” A fifth voice.
She tried to keep her expression neutral. No one was asking these kinds of questions back in Maine, so something must have slipped out in the time it took to fly from the States to Australia. Literally just a few hours and now everyone seems to know what’s happening.
Nuka drew in a deep breath and exhaled.
“I am not changing my bike!” She loudly said.
Several reporters were adamantly repeating their questions, others were rephrasing them.
“I am still driving the Velvet Dream, it’s right over there, you can take pictures if you’d like!” She shouted, pointing in the direction of the Garage with a gesture of her cellphone.
She was going to have to make a call to her Olympus Rep after this.
