Well, in what seems to us to be the "real world," something is either dead or alive. But in Dr Schrodinger's experiment, the cat was in a state of quantum indeterminacy; which just means that, because we don't know if the cat is alive or dead, it's being acted on by the laws of quantum physics. And quantum physics works very differently from the laws of science as we experience them.
That's why, until we observed the cat and saw whether it was alive or dead, it was: dead and not alive; not dead and alive; both dead and alive; and neither dead nor alive. Once we open the box and look at the cat, the latter two states cancel each other out and four universes are created; one in which the cat is dead, one in which it is alive and two anti-energy universes moving backwards in time from the point of creation to balance the two universes.
And BTW, this was a "thought experiment," an example that Dr Schrodinger used to model the mathematics that he used to construct the Stockholm Interpretation. It never had to be performed for real and no actual cats were harmed.
