"The Wildenfolk, often confused with Ratfolk and Wererats, were once a race of great prosperity. Long before the modern age, they were simple and dull creatures with little in mind other than to procreate, eat, and sleep, Until they were nurtured by the folk of The Groves of the northern midlands on Falskaar."
"The Wildenfolk were imbued with Magicks by the folk of the Groves such that their dumbness was cured. The Wildenfolk were creatures of great loyalty and lived much longer lives than any of their familia rodentia, some aging into great tufts of grey in their second or third century. These Wildenfolk, much like rats in appearance served as great companions to The Grove Folk until a time that the men and dryads that composed their number in the region disappeared in what would be known as The Great Razing, a period in which great hoards of mindless enemies invaded The Groves and killed a great many."
"With their naturally bonded companions mostly eradicated, the Wildenfolk buried themselves beneath the great peat of the swamps to wait away time until such that folk such as those from the grove may return to the land and grant then companionship once more. Only now do few of the Wildenfolk rise from the earth, but their great sadness and grief has already wrought it's work upon them. A sickness exists among those who rise which keeps their eyes from seeing light any longer. So, those who do rise, toil to seek the light through the one thing that can mend a Wildenfolk's eyes: companionship and bond with those such as from The Groves."
(Lore by The Rat King)
The Wildenfolk for "The Wanster Manual"! I wanted to draw some kind of rat-like humanoid creature that was made up of all the extra biological parts of creatures that would live in a bog. I'd like to revisit them in the future with variants that are more in line with foxes, birds, and maybe some fish.
Also, adding props to them was fun :> Lots of opportunities for worldbuilding!
