Neither Jessica or Harold had ever seen anything so beautiful. A canyon full of mana crystals. Some were smaller than their little finger whilst others were taller than their father’s castle. Mana bristled in the air, you could almost see it.
“To think that features like this were common in the old world,” Jessica finally said, breaking the silence.
“You think the fairy tales are true Jess?” Replied Harold.
“About the greedy king?”
“Yeah and he took all the world’s magic for himself only to end up corrupting the world's mana.”
“That’s just a fairy tale, Harold, Used to explain the unexplainable. It’s what my old tutor used to always say.”
“And I hate to stop two wannabe scholars from debating but we have to keep going.” Interrupted Richard coming up behind them. “Your brother's not far from here and we need to find a bridge.”
“I don’t think so”. The three turn around to see a minotaur towering over them. “I think it’s time we had a rematch.”
Richard put his arm in front of the kids. “Hey, come on now. Surely your boss wants these two alive eh?”
“And what reason should two little brats get to stay alive when they are easy prey?” The minotaur growled.
“A bonus?” Richard lied slowly moving away from the children. Truth was he had no idea what the mercenaries were getting paid be it money or fame. His heart relaxed a little when he saw the minotaur’s stance relax slightly with a snort keeping their focus on him.
“And you think that I’ll just let you go like that!?”
“Not at all.” Richard replied, his mind hurriedly making up a plan. “How’s about a duel between us? Victor gets the kids.” Jessica and Harold looked at Richard stunned.
“What are you…”
“Silence!” Boomed the minotaur silencing Jessica up. “No magic and you’re on, puny one.”
Richard smiled. “At least I can see where I’m putting the belt. Is that why you are always angry?” He Goaded.
The minotaur roared and lunged for Richard. He just managed to fleet out of the way, tossing his bag to Jessica as she took Harold behind a tree.
The minotaur slammed into a boulder but pushed himself back to go straight back at Richard. Caught off guard, Richard just barely skimmed past but the minotaur grabbed his shirt and pulled him into a bear hug. The minotaur made a deep chuckle. “Puny draggy can’t get out?”
The minotaur had him in a vice grip and he couldn’t slip out of it. Already feeling the air squeezed out of him he needed a plan to get out. That was when he remembered a vital lesson Captain Morau once told him. “If your life is on the line, playing dirty is always fine.” He brought his foot forward and heeled the Minotaur’s genitals as hard as he could.
The sudden sharp pain to the minotaur caused them to loosen their grip which was all he needed to wiggle out of their grip. As he rolled away the minotaur grabbed his shirt again but learning from last time, Richard kicked the minotaur’s torso to push himself away causing his shirt to get ripped off. He scrambled away, rolling behind a rock out of reach of the minotaur.
“Coward! Fight me like a man!” Shouted the minotaur.
“Like a man?” Richard asked getting out from his cover. “You’re the one who gave me a bear hug. Did mummy and daddy not love you enough?”
“Stop talking and fight!” The minotaur growled, steam coming out of his nostrils as rage filled his vision.
“Aww but I like talking. Especially to little fledgings like you. Did anyone tell you how adorable you look when you’re angry?” Richard smiled cheekily desperately trying to pull a front.
The Minotaur roared, slammed his hoof into the ground and charged at Richard. Richard's smile grew larger as he watched the Minotaur get closer at quite the pace but he remained still. Closer and closer it came getting faster and faster but he remained still eyes on the Minotaur. Then at the last moment, he leapt over the minotaur.
Richard's tail brushed against the fur of the minotaur as he rushed past. Fury grew in the minotaur’s eyes at the cowardice of this dragon until he saw what was in front of him. The crystal canyon.
Fury turned to panic as the minotaur desperately tried to slow down but it was too late. Richard gracefully landed on his feet just to witness the minotaur run off the edge. His screams echoed in the canyon as he fell for what seemed like hours until a sudden crack of bones and rock plunged it into silence.
“You killed him,” Harold finally said, breaking the silence.
“Correction, I just jumped out of the way of a raging bull. Not my fault he wasn't looking”, Richard replied darkly catching his breath.
“But you…”
“Would you rather be at the bottom of that canyon right now!?” Richard snapped. Harold shook his head. “Right. Like it or not Harold, people are trying to kill you and your sister. Asking them to nicely reconsider isn't going to work.”
“He's right Harold,” Jessica said, coming up next to Richard as Harold looked at her in surprise. “It's the price of nobility. There is always someone looking to kill you.”
Harold's head darted between the two of them. “You… How can you be so ok with this!? You killed him Richard!”
“And the locals of the fishing town don't count?” Richard responded firmly. Harold's mouth opened to respond but Richard's dark face halted him. He closed his mouth and shook his head. Richard ruffled his hair “Right answer now we best move. If he's around then more of your uncle's mercenaries are nearby. I'd rather we get to your brother's before they do.”
“You think we can make it?” Jessica asked, handing over Richard's bag where he then pulled out a spare shirt.
“The quicker we move, the more likely we can now come on. Let's find a bridge over this place.”
“Can't you just carry us over?” Harold asked.
Richard chuckled, putting his shirt on, “I'm honoured you think I'm that strong but no. The two of you are too heavy for me to carry over.”
“One at a time then?”
“No. I don't want to leave either of you alone even if it's just for a moment. It's not that I don't trust you”, Richard quickly added seeing the guilt in Harold's eyes, “But considering we've just survived an attack I'd rather I keep you two by my side so that I know you're safe.”
“Then we best keep moving”, Jessica said leading the way. “I think I can see a bridge in the distance.” Richard came up next to her and with his dragon vision, he could clearly see she was right.
“About a half hour walk. Come on Harold. Lets cover as much ground as we can”, Richard said as he and Jessica led the way, Harold jogging to keep up.
