Back in the 1800s when advertising what starting to get big a little brand started selling a brand new line of gum made from the Hyutbyark tree, a species that's all too similar to cinnamon expect it had much more than spicy flavor to ward off pest.
The tree had a potent poison that had mind altering effects (feelings of euphoria, general relaxed attitudes, and severe bloating) usually people would chew on the leaves for a slight buzz and bloat during the day helping them feel full and happy!
At some point some chemists had extracted the substance that did both of thses effects and made a much more potent formulation of it and used it as a flavoring for chewing gum.
With the mild effect they expect from the leaves they assumed a more potent gum would be all the rage! Unfortunately it certainly caused one. Towns and cities that sold the stuff had a incredible increase in cases of people floating off or bursting in their homes causing significant property damage and loss of people. They didn't test the product before they sold it and didn't realize, or failed to care, that the gum was very very very addictive with people chewing multiple sticks of the gum at once to increase the already potent effects of the poison.
