Here we have a marvelous creature, made by a marvelous person. Some of my friends know why I took down all art of my female characters, but I have decided to bring them back, starting with Irkalla.
Irkalla originally came from the idea of a 'Fresh water mountain dragoness' and Isvoc really, once again as so often, worked her magic and created this absolute delight of a dragon. Irkalla started out as a sketch reward from Isvoc's patreon and this full fledged design piece followed quickly. It is insane to me how this piece is already 4 years old, but I love it as much as that very first day when I got it. Thank you so much Isvoc for making such beautiful art for us!
The background of this character changed quite a bit ever since I got her, but she was always intended to be Solyr's mate in my setting. The general theme is a bit on the nose considering that she is night and water inspired to be the opposite of the sunny boy, but after mulling over it for ages, the flavour of the theme had never grown stale. Where Solyr shines with passion, intellect and an ever present smile, Irkalla is somewhat more reclusive and mysterious. She is a crone at heart. The oracle, the mistress in the frozen mist. Her visage appearing in the ice before she shows glimpses of that what was and what will be. Where Solyr is the light of knowledge, Irkalla is nebulous potential and esoteric prophecy.
I have always been fascinated by the archetype of the witch, and always associated magic, sorcery and future telling as more feminine, especially the stranger and less scientific it becomes. I also really enjoyed the stories of the oracle of Delphi and the character of the Pythia which really are just amazing inspirations... all greek myths are really! I hope to add a little story into her next piece and we will see how the words are going to treat me!
