Male Surge of the Arabian Nights - quiwiran
*THERE IS A STORY BELOW THE DESCRIPTION, A SEQUEL TO THIS ONE https://www.furaffinity.net/view/61731005/ *
Had a little desire to continue the Male Surge storyline I began.
Surge might be one of my favorite new addition to the IDW comics and after seeing a few really good opposite gender take on the Sonic cast, I tried to picture how Surge would look...and how his Arabian Nights counterpart would be like. So here in this double what if do we get to see Surge, leader of the 40 thieves. Yet this is a sequel and he might just be a bit more heroic...might.
This was drawn by quiwiran, an artist I found on YCH.commishes. Pretty polyvalent, quick and cheap. You can find their stuff right here. https://ych.commishes.com/user/quiwiran
Now how heroic is he actually? Read on and find out!

HEROIC THIEVERY
“Boss, the caravan is getting near!”
Surge heard Kitty and her announcement as the 40 thieves, of which there weren't really 40 anymore since many went their own ways...but the name was more recognizable than the 17 thieves. At any rate, his lieutenant and all-around minion had been spying for them, relayed by scouts and hidden relays as their target was approaching the ambush site. It would be time to do what they did best as Beanie the Dynamite, known as such due to her explosive personality, was only kept in check by Barque the bear, far from the much cooler climate that was more comfortable for her.
“Everyone in position...this is a new day for us, one where we'll turn a new page in our story!”
Surge believed it, as drastic the change was. Clutchina, Fang and others had parted with the gang due to this sudden decision. Unpopular and prone to lower their profit and fun, Surge was still pig-headed for a tenrec as everyone knew this was motivated by a rather crazed fixation on Sonique, the blue blur herself. Delusional in attraction to the heroine, ever since he had heard that she was the real deal and a genuine good person, Surge had in head to get closer to her. Obsessed and yet completely avoiding the obvious detail that he had fallen for her and hard, everyone remaining nonetheless entertained the notion if only because of grey morals, the temptation of gains even though lower or even a desire for nobler pursuits...that, or they were bored. Still, their rampage and debauchery was over and now...now they'd make a difference.
“Alright, incapacitate but don't wound or kill. We're not that ruthless anymore!”
The caravan, driven by a quokka merely employed to get it from point A from point B, was the true target. He knew for certain through sources that it was carrying goods and riches that belonged to a very rich merchant, the kind which sold all sorts of products...including slaves. While the latter wasn't in the cargo, much to the chagrin of Surge as it would make for a strong statement, it would still be a solid hit and a testament to the transformation of the merciless 40 thieves, yet to be 40 again, to a force for good. The small number of guards, ill-equipped, were dealt with swiftly as Surge himself went on with lighting and speed to scare them off, swiping their swords and spears. Kitsunami herself employed water to turn the ground to mud, making it so the wheels were stuck.
“Best flee, little quokka...or else!” Surge threatened as he did allow for this poor man merely working a job to go away without a scratch. In the past he did despise such individuals, only blindly doing the bidding of the evil to survive on the backs of the less fortunate...but things weren't so simple. If genuinely good people could exist like Sonique, then perhaps morality was more complex and actually existent. Indulgence and apathy towards other could be evil...and while Surge wasn't entirely fully grasping things, such as still relying on banditry despite it all, it was still a step in the right direction. At least he dearly hoped so.
“Uh, Boss, Barque is still trying to rough up the guards...” Kitty went on to say, pointing at the bear wearing scarves over scarves to preserve her temperature. She had indeed been the muscle and general rough and tough gal now that Roughe and Tumbelline were gone...and perhaps it went a bit over her head.
“Hey, stop that! Just toss them in the cart after they're tied up and leave it...” Surge said, gritting his shark-like teeth and producing sparks, a surefire sign that he'd get violent and soon if he wasn't obeyed. The law of the strongest still applied, the lesson self-learned hadn't been quite digested yet, a very imperfect hero if the term could even apply. “Just grab whatever you can and we'll be on our way!”
“So, boss, sir, whatever-we-need-to-call-you...what's the plan?” Beanie went on to ask, the rather coocoo bird and general out-there girl not always making the most sense...and having perhaps a lesser grasp on reality than anyone Surge knew.
“Well, bird brain, we steal from the rich and the powerful, first and foremost,” Surge began to explain again, dearly hoping he wouldn't have to say it for a third time as right now was certainly not the best instance to do so: during the heist itself.
“Yeah sure, they got the money. Makes sense...then what?” Beanie asked some more, oblivious to common sense a lot of the time even though she could be devastating with those explosive tricks she had picked from afar.
“Well...we redistribute to the poor! That way we help them!” Surge said, proud, his back straight and his torso pushed a little forward to emphasize his grand nature now that he was a good guy. That way perhaps Sonique would be impressed and they could work together, get closer, share a meal, then perhaps a more intimate night and then-
“Uh...haven't we like, robbed everyone from the poor and the rich in the past few years? Aren't they deathly afraid of us?” Beanie asked, that question dropping every chatter from the group as everyone stopped to listen due to the sudden burst of sense she was making. “How could we distribute it all anyway? We can't just throw a stolen rug to a bunch of poor people, they'll think it's stolen. And wouldn't them receiving so suddenly a ton of gold, gems and what-not make those destitutes become highly suspicious?”
A dreary silence filled the area as Surge looked around to these ill-gotten gains. Sure they were ill-gotten first and stealing them would be poetic justice...right? He wasn't so sure anymore now. Yes that merchant was evil, but then giving it back to people like that outright would put them in trouble? It was...a difficult situation and problem.
“Sir? What do we do now? I mean boss...?” Kitty asked as everyone was scratching their head. Obviously Surge hadn't quite thought of that, or really that far ahead. They had been the scourge of the desert and of nearby cities for so long. Beanie was, to the stupefaction of everyone, entirely right.
“Uhhhhhh...” Surge responded, his confidence rather shaken as perhaps things were far more complicated than he ever knew. Being a bandit was easy, something natural to him, yet trying to be a hero...
Well that would prove much, much harder than it seemed.
