The ruins were weird. Duran knew that going in. He also knew the men behind him were trying to kill him. So Duran went with weird.
Broken stone pillars reached into the sky around him. Monuments, or so they felt like. Massive chunks had fallen away yet some unknown power held the now floating sections aloft. High into the sky. Like markers.
No-one from the village knew who had built the ruins or why, yet they were considered sacred. Tales spoke of protection, guardians. People came here to seek out safety. Fighting was forbidden and all who broke that sacred rule where shunned from the village.
Hopefully they'd make an exception for Duran.
Duran had never come to the ruins before. He was a fighter, a warrior, a champion. He didn't need protection. He was protection. Usually. Today was a weird day.
They were resting on a pedestal that had never been there before, and because Duran himself had never been to the ruins before he didn't think the strange pedestal or the objects resting on it any weirder than normal. They were triangular in shape and made of strange metal. And they glowed. Which. Was. Weird.
Except the bootfalls behind him were growing louder, he had no weapon, and there were straps on the underside of the metal plates that allowed him to tie them to his arms. Much like a shield. So Duran went with weird.
But there was something he had to do first.
Duran grabbed a sharp rock laying near the pedestal and used it to carve runes into the face of the probably shields. Runes for strength, valor, endurance, protection. His name.
The soldiers stormed into the clearing just behind Duran. With a fire in his eyes he spun around and faced his pursuers.
"Alright. You want a piece of me?!" he roared. He slipped his hands beneath the straps of the shields and was only slightly shocked when the straps tightened on their own, binding the shields to his forearms.
"Then come!"
He reared back his right arm, and as he did blue flames burst forth from the metal. Yet it did not burn him.
"And learn my name!"
