Unlike females where the head of each province is involved in overseeing her own little society with a colony of workers and those with specific roles, as well as general subjects and citizens, the males(the real deal ones) Live outside the societies in isolated regions living a constant life of combat to maintain territory. It is because of this lifestyle that you more than likely see a male in his combat form more often than not.
They still have SOME of the vespid like aesthetics, but lean more heavily into the beetle side and have just as many diverse combat abilities and traits as their female counterparts. Most notable things beyond the obvious is head ornamentation which can double as a weapon which makes up for the fact they do not have a stinger or venom which is female exclusive.
Breeding with this specific type of male exclusively produces mantoids that can assume combat forms. When the time comes, a noble will venture outside her province and find one. If they both take a liking to each other they will proceed to expand their territory by fighting other couple. Once this is done they will proceed to do the deed and live together for about a month. The Noble (a female exclusive title) will then return back to her province to raise her young with the help of her servants, the male will not be able to return with her and will have to stay and keep defending the borders of his turf until next time they meet.
Mantoid couples mate for life even though they do not always stay in each other's presence due to what is expected of their duties. The only way either partner would seek another is if their chosen dies.
When it comes to offspring their branches in life will vary depending on their sex. If they are female they will inherit their mother's province when they come of age unless they have a sister they have to duel for it. If they are male they will be sent back out to the wilderness to battle after their first molt.
Because of the constant way of combat one may see a male mantoid use other capabilities beyond their own biology, such as chi-expression. Every male has to fight for themselves and has no teacher to learn from. Due to this previous statement, each Male mantoid as a VERY uniqe fighting style that sadly die with them.
Male duels are just as violent and brutal as the duel between females for province. There's one difference however and male mantoid duels tend to be far more destructive due to less restraint being practiced. The only time restraint is practiced is when their chosen females are present and fighting along with them.
Wanted to doodle this so here it be ^U^
