It's a quote from Guy Debord, regarding "the spectacle", the central notion of his book, "The Society of The Spectacle,"
"In the general sense, the spectacle refers to 'the autocratic reign of the market economy which had acceded to an irresponsible sovereignty, and the totality of new techniques of government which accompanied this reign.' It also exists in a more limited sense, where spectacle means the mass media, which are 'its most glaring superficial manifestation.'"
It's really deep stuff, and more than a little terrifying when you consider that all of it has been sitting right under our noses since the 1920s, and nobody has cared enough to actually do anything to stop it.

his work was so good and solid the liberal media's only way to respond to it was to call it passe and not interesting, shallow, or opaque and overly academic (which is a bit fair tbh). Which is funny bc that response literally proves his words, by framing his ideas as 'not cool or interesting' or 'too deep/academic' it is then not desirable to those ppl that are utterly hopelessly engaged in the Spectacle (most ppl unfortunately)
I'm being a little pessimistic here but to me the whole part of "Dismissing it as [adjectives] proves it right, because they're too deep in the Spectacle™ to See" comes off a bit wrong. On a good day and with the right argument, this is Cassandra trying to save Troy, but on a bad day or with too vague an argument it comes off as "I'm not mad, everyone else is!"; see also the concept of False Consciousness. (I'll have to read the text to make my own judgement).
I'm not saying "dismissing it as (insert anything here) proves Debord right". I'm talking specifically about the liberal critiques and imo they fail to do anything but reinforce the ideas he brings up. There's certainly valid critiques of Debord's ideas, i don't agree with everything he puts forth. But many of his ideas would seem to pass the test of time and could be argued to be more relevant now than in his own time.
It's easy for me to say "I'm so pumped to see Thom in this" bc it's true, and I'm super honoured. But part of the reason for that is that this composition is such a great way to pull through the central contention of the Debord piece. It's really doing a lot; the red feels like it should be menacing but there's a kind of warmth to it; the ambivalence on all their faces; the shared direction of their gazes but none of them is engaging with each other etc etc. Really really great stuff man. 🙏
I always think it's between the literary/commercial distinction that writers and editors still debate, and some argue that does not distinction that exists.
All coming from Aristotle poetics book, between plot/character, or the western model of plot/spectacle. I do think Robert McGee argues it best in his book Character, since it extends to social media and the current landscape of visual and verbal media.
Thanks 👀🛋️

Also, this is how I imagine mot """normal""" people would react to my fetishes.

LMAO at the final comment. Thank u! Yeah idk on top of getting bored w/drawing ONLY furry porno, there are just so many people doing it now. and i'm thinking... what am i really contributing to our scene here? just another guy making porn? that's honestly fine. but if i'm being real, there are ppl that are way better at it than me. particularly when it comes to single images. so i started paying attention more to the weirder ideas I have, inspired by our times and other great media i've seen, and on narratives and themes. and focusing on my stories/ideas that skirt the line between porn and something else. and i've been happier artistically and feeling a lot more enthusiastic about making art & porn in general, doing stuff like this or American Dreaming, etc. Even Memory Leak, it's just porno fun, but I don't think there's really anything else like it in furry, so it feels like we're contributing something unique and different instead of just more VN romance/porn etc. And I've been lucky that most folks that follow my stuff are kinda into it. Anyway thanks again!
pleasure is mine!! though i'm compelled now to stress this is *in addition* to your other work in all the strata of the porno sphere, your one-off cheesecakes, your story-driven stuff, and all the rest of it. in fact i feel like i could go off on a severely underqualified tear on the sanitized nature of the Spectacle, or the precisely-dialed-in level of sexuality it permits, which has no doubt already been well-trodden by people smarter and better-read than me. imo this piece and your others like it *can* and *do* stand alone but i think is bolstered by the indulgent porno sharing space in the oeuvre. christ, shut up anf. anyway, in short i'm glad you're still doing your thing!!
thank u! i wanted it to be just furry created characters. i had a big list and a lot didn't make it in for whatever reason. usually bc i couldn't draw them as well lol. a few are just for me too. the bird is one of my bfs and i wanted to put dragoneer to recognize his contributions to furry
