Get ready to make eggs and throw eggs because today marks the 30th anniversary of Yoshi's Island (release date in North America).
This is by far one of my favorite SNES games as well as one of the most impactful games for me as an artist. Some of you may know how much I love this game and there's plenty of reasons for it.
🔘The hand-drawn art style, which almost didn't make it in the game but Shigeru Miyamoto made the game more cartoony looking after going against the suggestion of using pre-rendered graphics similar to Donkey Kong Country.
🔘The game uses sprite deformation making some characters squash and stretch (Burt the Bashful's boss battle as a prime example).
🔘This game gave Yoshi some of his signature moves in Smash Bros. like his hovering flutter, ground pound and tongue usage.
Did You Know...
🔘 In the German version of the game, "Touch Fuzzy, Get Dizzy" is called "Lustiges Sporen Drama" abbreviated LSD based on the hallucinogenic effects of the Fuzzy's when Yoshi comes in contact with them.
🔘Burt the Bashful's design references the character Obelix from the French comic series "Asterix". Fittingly the French name for Burt the Bashful is "Gros Belixo" (Gros meaning Fat and Belixo being an anagram of Obelix).
🔘In World 3-8, one of the more infamous secrets is defeating Naval Piranha by hitting it with an egg while it's in it's unenlarged state which will have Kamek say "Oh, My!!!" and the boss easily defeated. This was referenced in "Yoshi's Wooly World" where after the cutscene with Kamek finishes the boss battle will continue afterwards.
🔘During the intro of Yoshi's Island, Yoshi's render is based on Donkey Kong's pre-rendered graphics from Donkey Kong Country.
