Here's a neat little pair of pick up tongs that I have made using the remains of a failed pair of tongs that I had saved from a past project. The parts of the tongs to make this pair were the reigns. The reigns are the lengths that you hold.
These are rather light duty tongs and won't be used for anything more than picking up hot pieces of metal.
The shape of the jaw allows it to hold various thicknesses of material, so it can easily grasp anything as thin as 1/8th to anything as thick as 3/4.
If they were to be handled as if they were forging tongs, the user would notice that it does not firmly clamp anything that it holds and the material would turn and slip in the jaws of these tongs.
