The Cyborg Warrior Strikes Swiftly (2025)
posted 2 months ago Textmode & Pixel Artist
For a while, I wanted to try doing 320×200 RGBI pixel art for the IBM CGA, whose RGBI color capabilities in that mode are even more limited by default than in textmode or the EGA standard: you have a trio of four-color palettes to choose from, in high or low intensity, and they are all as eye-watering as you'd expect from a 1981 piece of hardware intended strictly for business computers. As with my EGA hi-res Umbreon in a cloak, I also had a particular fixed idea in mind, and in this case, it was drawing a protogen, a species of cyborg aliens original to furry culture created in the late 2010s. I suppose it felt right for such an obviously low-caliber graphics card.
For this first shot at a CGA image, given its limits, I chose to draw the character with flat colors, and place them on an abstract background treating the high-contrast colors as light and dark shades. I had the whole image drawn overnight, and then spent the next day before a long shift at work cleaning it up, as I'd originally done the background in an extremely messy way. I then finished it up the evening after, having to stop myself from tweaking it further, always a sign that it came out well.
Drawn October 3-5, 2025.
