Now here's something I've been meaning to make for a while: a map for all the lion territories in my TLK universe! At first, I wasn't sure how to put this together since Season 3 of The Lion Guard had Kion and his friends running all over the place, but then I found this map made by the DA user JeffnaBooots that gave me a pretty good idea on how to make this. I doubt that this is geographically accurate to whatever part of Africa that TLK is set in, but I honestly don't care about that.
Also, keep in mind that this might be subject to change if I think of more territories/kingdoms to add.
Pridelands
The Pridelands (formerly known as Milele) are a vast territory that largely consists of broad savanna grasslands dotted with water holes, springs and rivers. The most prominent landmark in the kingdom is Pride Rock, a large rock formation that was believed to have been formed by an earthquake many generations prior, and provides home to its resident pride. The kingdom's fauna is very diverse, largely consisting of ungulates and even a few cheetahs.
The Pridelands are noteworthy for establishing the rules of monarchy that have since been adopted by other lion kingdoms. Long ago, lion prides were much more savage, as males had to leave their natal pride once they came of age, and males that took over new prides had to kill the cubs of the previous male. But all changed thanks to Bomani, a male who would go on to become remembered as the First King. After defeating the cruel male Alamgir in a mashindano, Bomani declared that lion prides would behave very differently from here on out, that male lions will no longer have to challenge other males and kill their cubs, and that the new leader will be decided by a line of succession rather than fighting for the role. His half-brother Askari, having obtained an amazing power called the Roar Of The Elders during his stay at the Tree Of Life, forms a team of lions tasked with protecting the kingdom from potential threats, and the two brothers bring in a new era of peace and prosperity. Four of Bomani's six children disperse to either found new prides or introduce other prides to this new way of lion society.
Throughout its existence, the Pridelands faced many battles and threats to their peaceful existence, a few being caused by the descendants of Alamgir. But funnily enough, a descendant of Alamgir going by the name Kovu ends up marrying into the royal family after he and the pride's princess Kiara put a stop to a war between the Pridelanders and the Outsiders, thereby unifying the two.
Mbali Fields
The Mbali Fields are a patch of territory in the northeast part of the Pridelands. The land is flat with a few areas of foliage and rocks, and are an ideal grazing ground for the local gazelle and zebra populations. Many generations prior, the Mbali Fields were once their own separate lion pride, but the small kingdom collapsed following an invasion led by a white lion named Kiros, who had them all slaughtered after they refused to join his army. Fortunately, a small handful of lions escaped, and the Mbali Fields’ royal bloodline still survives today thanks to their princess Sarari marrying into the Pridelands’ royal family.
Back Lands
The Back Lands are a kingdom that borders the south of the Pridelands. The land is ruled by a herd of zebras, but a few leopards make their home here as well. Whatever lions that do live here are either rogues or small family units. Many generations prior, the Back Lands were ruled by a pride of lions, but that all changed during the reign of the Pridelands’ queen, Jina. While the lions that lived there were healthy and had plenty to eat, the pride itself was dying. Most of the females were old, and those who were still young had cubs who were all female. With their numbers dwindling with each passing year and little hope of population growth, the pride was ripe for takeover if another pride decided to become hostile. And so, King Erevu offers his daughter Furaha as a betrothal for Jina’s son Mohatu so that the Back Lands’ royal line could still continue. What remained of the Back Lands' pride fully integrated themselves into the Pridelands, with the lions leaving the kingdom in the care of the local zebra population.
Outlands
The Outlands are a barren patch of territory bordering the Pridelands, with its points of interest being a rocky plateau, an active volcano, and massive termite mounds with many hidden pathways beneath. It was once more hospitable in generations past, but the land was hit hard by the drought that occurred during Scar's reign, turning into a dustbowl almost overnight. While no lion kingdom lives there today, the Outlands had been occupied by two different prides in years past.
For generations, the Outlands had been inhabited by the Ash Pride, a fierce pride that made their home near the volcano. But the pride collapsed and was all but wiped out in a bloody civil war following the disappearance of their princess Iqhwa, and the few lions who survived the battle migrated into a different part of the Outlands, forming what they dubbed the Siri Pride. This little pride survived well up until the drought that occurred during Scar's reign, with most of the prey animals moving elsewhere and many of the pride's members dying off as a result. Following the death of their dominant male Tunuka, what remained of the Siri Pride was taken over by a group of lions led by Zira, who had recently been banished from the Pridelands after they refused to accept Simba as the true king. Zira promises them a much better home in the Pridelands if they swear loyalty to her, to which they agree.
After Kiara and Kovu put an end to the war between the Pridelanders and the Outsiders, most of the Siri Pride's remnants integrated themselves into the Pridelands, while a small handful accompanied Kion back to the Tree Of Life. In time, the Outlands finally began to recover, and during the reign of Queen Kiara, the land was transformed into a prosperous hyena kingdom led by Jasiri.
Theluji Mountains
The Theluji Mountains are a range of mountains on the border of the Pridelands. In generations past, the mountains were inhabited by a pride of white lions led by a powerful male named Kiros, who claimed the territory for themselves after driving off the native gorilla population. During the reign of King Obasi, Kiros later leads the pride in an invasion in an attempt to claim the Pridelands for themselves. Several lions are killed including Obasi, but a handful of lions escape including the princes Mufaro and Takatifu, and the two lions later gather recruits to reclaim their homeland. Among their recruits include the ousted gorillas and a deflector from Kiros’ army, having left after they killed her mate. Mufaro and Takatifu succeed in reclaiming their homeland and Kiros is skilled in battle, and what remains of his army is driven off. The gorillas reclaim the Theluji Mountains and create a kingdom that still rules there to this day, while what remained of Kiros’ army later formed the Nyeupe Pride, a wandering pride of white or near-white lions travelling from kingdom to kingdom to preach the good word of the Great Spirit.
Msingi Pride
The Msingi Pride is a kingdom that makes their home on the other side of the Theluji Mountains, and is one of the oldest allies of the Pridelands. They were among the first to convert to the new ways of lion society established by Bomani, and the then ruler of the pride offered one of his sons as a betrothal to Bomani’s eldest daughter. The two kingdoms were close for several generations. But that all changed after Scar rose to power. While they suffered nowhere nearly as bad as the Pridelanders, the Msingi experienced their own shortage of food due to having extra mouths to feed after taking in runaway and exiled Pridelanders. After Scar’s defeat, the Msingi’s prince Malka offered to re=establish an alliance between them and the Pridelands in the form of a betrothal, to which Simba agreed.
Broad Veldts
The Broad Veldts are a territory that has few trees but plenty of vast, grassy plains, which attracts many grazing animals to sustain the predators that lived there. The Broad Veldts pride first converted to the New Ways after Bomani’s son Ajani and a few other males joined the pride. While they follow the New Ways, any males born in the pride that aren’t part of the royal family must leave to find a new one to join once they came of age, as Ajani’s mate Lisaba was adamant on that tradition remaining. The pride also ends up being very superstitious about lions born with mismatched eye colors due to a string of unfortunate events surrounding a lion that had them in generations past.
During the reign of King Ahadi, the Broad Veldts offer their princess Sarafina as a betrothal for his son Mufasa, but both of them end up falling in love with other lions in the pride instead. Mufasa and Sarafina both agree that their future children will be betrothed instead, and they do fall in love in time.
Nguvu Pride
The Nguvu Pride is a now extinct pride that once resided in between the Broad Veldts and the Outlands, some time before Bomani became the First King. They were a very fierce and savage pride that put strength over all else, and they made sure that only the strongest cubs would make it to adulthood. After Alamgir’s departure, the Nguvu Pride was struck hard by a disease outbreak, resulting in a very quick downfall. A handful of lions that managed to avoid becoming sick end up heading into the Outlands and form the Ash Pride.
Sunrise Pride
The Sunrise Pride is a kingdom founded by Bomani’s son Yazid and a family of Tsavo lions from the Desertlands. A long running tradition in the pride is that the second-born child of the royal family is trained to be the future monarch’s majordomo, as Yazid felt that the second child is as equally important as the first, but there have been exceptions to this over the years. After Prince Jongea became king following the death of his older brother Risasi, his widowed sister-in-law Buruga stepped up as his majordomo just to make sure that he didn’t screw things up. And years later during the reign of King Tukufu, he and his mate Afra decide to train their adopted son Xiro as the next majordomo as opposed to their actual second born Chiamaka, choosing to betrothe her to the Pridelands’ prince Ahadi instead. The pride is untrustworthy of leopards, as during the early days of King Afolabi’s reign, a leap of them was exposed for trying to dispose of the royal family so that they could have the kingdom’s food supply all to themselves. Generations later during the reign of Queen Auni, her majordomo sister Auri ends up having a litter of half-leopard cubs after breeding with a leopard named Jiona (a descendant of one of the exiled leopards), which causes quite a stir in the Sunrise Pride.
Gale Lands
The Gale Lands are a pride that was founded by Bomani’s daughter Niah and a small pride of lions led by a white male named Kimba, having left their old home in the jungle following a disease outbreak that did great damage to their former territory’s ecosystem. While they were never mates, Kimba and Niah lead their new pride together as king and queen, with the two of them betrothing their respective cubs to each other. Over the course of generations, the pride maintains a strong fear of the jungle, believing that the disease that almost killed their ancestors could still be there. Any lion that was caught entering the jungle would be banished on the spot, with some past examples being former Prince Ribhan and a former mjuzi named Barrak. When Queen Chayi becomes the new monarch, she ends up being approached by a pride of lions that lived in the jungle, all of which were perfectly healthy.
Jungle
The jungle is located on the edge of the Desertlands, and is the ancestral home to what would later become the Gale Lands pride. The land is a hidden paradise, with plenty of food and water for just about any animal, but the land was struck hard by a disease outbreak in generations past. It took years for the jungle’s ecosystem to recover, and when it finally did, the lions that went on to found the Gale Lands refused to return, believing that the deadly disease could still be there. But in the following generations, the jungle would be inhabited by lions once more. The exiled prince Ribhan would live there with his leopard mate Mulimu and their daughter Omavi, and the Gale Lands’ former mjuzi Barrak made a home there with his adopted daughter, Iniko. The former Gsle Lands king Taonga would reside there after being ousted by a pair of rogues, with the aging male later becoming a mentor to a young cub named Simba that lived there with a meerkat and warthog. A proper pride would later be formed by a small family and some lions that escaped from the Watu Village, and the pride’s ruler Tanabi would later approach the Gale Lands’ queen Chayi for a potential alliance.
Desertlands
The Desertlands are a large, flat expanse of dry land on the border of the jungle and the Pride Lands. It is a large, flat expanse of dry land with some scattered sand dunes, and only animals that are adapted for such an environment live here. The lions that do live here are Tsavos, a largely nomadic subspecies with little to no mane that don't tolerate weakness of any kind.
Watu Village
This isn’t a lion kingdom but rather the home of the watu, who are tall, hairless ape-like creatures. The village has a makeshift colosseum where lions and other animals are pitted against each other for sport, and in generations past, they ended up slaying a jungle lion named Panja after he decided to free several animals that they had captured. Many generations later, a recently captured lion of theirs would cause all the animals in the colosseum to escape, with the freed animals settling down in the nearby jungle.
Grass Walls
The Grass Walls are a mandrill kingdom north of the Pridelands, and is a lush land home to many animals. Before Bomani became the First King, the Grass Walls was the home of Ghalyela, having been adopted by a mandrill named Hekima as a young cub. It's from them that she and Bomani learn about how the deceased lived on as stars in the night sky, and when Bomani becomes king of the new established Pridelands, Hekima is invited to live there with her daughter and is granted the title of Royal Mjuzi, an individual responsible for healings and caring for the pride's inhabitants and serving as the royal family's adviser. After Hekima retires, she trains a much younger mandrill to take her place. All future mjuzis are recruited directly from this land, with a handful of pride even having lions that were trained in the Grass Walls.
River Lands
The River Lands are a lion kingdom far east of the Outlands. One distinct trait among the lions of this pride is that they typically have green sclera instead of the usual yellow. Some animals believe that this is due to their diet, but this has never been fully confirmed. Unlike most other lion kingdoms, the River Lands only have male lions as rulers, and if the king is unable to produce a legitimate male heir, then his daughter’s betrothed will be the next king instead. This is the way things had been for generations, but that all changed during the reign of King Umbusi. He ends up producing two daughters with his mate and sets up a betrothal for his eldest Njozi in the form of Kumeza, a pride from the Broad Veldts. But the two young lions never see each other as more than just good friends, and Njozi ends up falling for Kubili, a strange lion in the pride that was some both male and female. Umbusi is enraged when he finds out that this freak lion had bred with Njozi, and he attacks Kubili out of rage and chases him out of the pride. Njozi runs away from the pride shortly after, leaving her toddler-aged sister Bititi as her father’s remaining child. When Bititi and her betrothed become the new rulers after Umbusi’s death, both lions decree that things will be different from here on out, that the first born of the royal couple will be the next heir regardless of gender.
Tree Of Life
The Tree of Life is a special haven for hurt, sick, or endangered animals, and is also the home of a group of lions known as the Night Pride. This territory is very unique as it hosts every kind of biome imaginable, making it an ideal home for just about any animal. Long ago, even before the reign of the First King, the lions of the Night Pride once possessed an amazing power that they used to protect their home, but lost it when a past monarch closed off the entrance to the kingdom following an attack from some vicious outsiders. According to legend, the Great Spirit declared that the power would return someday, but only through a lion outside of the Night Pride. During the reign of King Lanre, a rogue lion named Askari came to the tree of life to heal from some injuries he sustained after a failed attempt to take over a pride. And just as the old legends predicted, that incredible power -a powerful roar known as the Roar Of The Elders- ends up coming back through this outsider.
Askari spends the next few weeks learning how to use this newfound ability. And after saving the Tree Of Life from a fire that could've killed several animals, Askari decides to use this incredible ability to defend others, which Lanre strongly approves of. Askari later returns to his homeland, and many generations later, a lion that possessed the Roar Of The Elders would come to the Tree Of Life and help protect it from danger once again.
