An old sketch I started years ago and now in my slump I returned to it and was able to finish it, and it turned out looking pretty good.
There are a few significant plot holes in 'The Secret of NIMH' - where did that magic amulet come from? But thinking it over, there's really only one thing I wish had been in the movie, and that would have been one brief flashback to Mrs. F(B)risby's life with Jonathan before he died - that would have rounded out her character and her relationship to her family, and also added to the mystery of where Jonathan came from - then the movie would feel complete to me. So I decided to draw what that scene might have looked like - before falling asleep she starts remembering a romantic evening with Jonathan before her kids were born when he took her outside the farmer's window to listen to their gramophone. And the dialogue would go something like this -
- "There - you hear it?"
- "Yes, I hear it... but how can they...?"
- "They store the sound on those discs, and then it comes through the machine, into the room - like I told you how they use electricity to store the light. It's really something, isn't it?"
- "Yes, it is. Jonathan, I wish you could tell me how you know so much."
- (hesitates) "Oh... I will. Someday. When I'm ready. (shifting gears) Hey, you know what else humans do with this music? They dance! Come on - let me show you..."
(he starts to spin her around to the music)
- "(laughs) Jonathan, I'm getting dizzy! Is it always like this?"
- "Sorry, no... sometimes they dance slow..." (he slows down and starts to hold her more gently)
- "Yes, I like that. You know, Jonathan - I hope our children are as smart as you."
