One of you lovely folks requested a close up of this picture to see my brush strokes. Sounds good to me. This is blown up larger than in the original so pardon the roughness. One thing to keep in mind. This is a glazed painting Ie I do the entire painting as a black and white value painting. Then I let it dry compleltely, then using very thin washes I glaze the colour over top. It's rather time consuming as you must let each layer dry before putting another one down but I love the results!

i'm not exactly sure if i got what you just told us about your techniques, but it surely sounds time-consuming. no wonder you take that much for comissions, must be the work of a lifetime! :)
the results are fantastic, and the rest makes your pictures life-like in a certain sense.

I'm terrible at keeping track of how long it takes to paint a pic. It varies wildly depending on size, complexity and how in the groove I am. I think this pic took around three hours all told. And this style takes a different amount of time than a fully colour painting ie no underpainting. Doing the underpainting goes pretty quckly cause I'm not having to switch colours and such. I can just focus on the values and the contrasts. The glazing takes a bit longer than you'd think as I have to wait for the washes to dry completely before laying down the next one.
I don't want to sound too much like a newb but I am just beginning with the acrylics so some of the words I'm not sure what they mean. Sorry.

"black and white value painting" = just shades of black and white?
"washes" = watered down paint?
"glaze" = special paint?
Sorry for the questions. The only way I will learn. *giggles*

Oops just noticed this. Yes, just painted with black and white paint. Washes are inddex watered down paint (acrylic again), this is glazing. Lots of layers of watered down paint applied to the underoainting. Some you apply and wipe down with a paper towel. You keep adding levels of glazing till you get a colour saturation you like. Finally go in and touch up the highlights. Hope that helps. Feel free to ask more questions.
Don't feel bad about timing. I'm just getting back to my art and it's been some time since I posted on here. LOL Thank you for your answers. I think I might have actually seen this technique with someone on YouTube that uses water colors. She was constantly adding, blotting and adding again. You are definite inspiration to us all!
