i really considered the crits you guys gave me!
am I going in the right direction?
(i know, i should work on backgrounds, but from everything you guys told me i tried to cover every aspect; something other than a dog, somewhat of a background, better composition.
And by the way this is Gregory, he's my one-winged snowy owl gryphon. He presented himself to me in a dream a while ago!

i agree with you too, realism is a style any one can do because it's all around us... even if this is semi-realism!
I'm probably not going to drift too far from my toony style seeing as it's my firm ground. but i also grew up on realism so there's no harm in both styles, as long as i can do something different.

realism catches some people's eyes, but I think refined artists (not to sound shitty but) value a more stylized art because it is as original as the way somebody speaks, or their life journey, or what have you. it's fun to play but I hope you don't lose yourself in this.
impressive as your skills are, this piece is personally not too impressive to me because I feel like I've seen it a million times before. perhaps take what you learned here about backgrounds and interactions and apply that to your cartoony style? I think you should expand more on styles like that beautiful painting you did of crowe, that is really my favorite piece you've done in a while, the way that you used a coloring style as skillful as this on a piece as soft and cute as that was really impressive.

honestly i completely disagree.... this is absolutely beautiful... and realism is very hard to do. it's really hard to convey an image that people actually get lost in because it looks so real :P
it takes someone with great skill to do that. and in my opinion, this is definitely the right direction!
but certainly balancing cartoony styles and realism is the way to go by far!

Im with you james. This is completely stunning. Yes anyone can do realism, but then again anyone can do art too or fly a fighter jet. Whats hard is doing it well. Falvie I can't tell you if this is a good direction, you have to decide that, but what I can say is you certainly impressed me. Its not everyday you jump onto FA and see fantasy portrayed with attention to realism especially when you're used to seeing the artist do more cartoony pieces. This feels soft and tangible, but doesn't loose the sense of wonder that fiction gives.
This is excellent.
This is excellent.
Agreed. Realism is ridiculously hard to do well in my opinion. But honestly for me what matters is that you have fun with your art more than anything else. If you enjoy this style draw in it. If you enjoy the other, then draw in that one. As far as I'm concerned having fun with art is what makes it special. Of course it's always good to broaden your horizons but it isn't necessarily "needed" per say.
But either way this piece is absolutely beautiful.

I think that one can find style in their realism, or semi realism. While I love your cartoon style, I see your own style of realism here. And I think its breathtaking the way youve painted this.
Best example I can give is Sullivan on dA. She has a realism style but in her own way, so you know it is her. I think you are similar :)
I often bounce between different levels of toon and realism depending on mood. I dont think you should limit yourself, draw how you feel like drawing :)
Personally I think this shows much more of your skill as an artist, not to say that your toons aren't absolutely friggin beautiful on their own.
I love both sides of your art, and would like to see both in the future, but that is up to you x3
Um, realistic styled art is very tough to get a grasp of compared to animated/toon art. Unless an artist is willing to put a lot of time into learning to render their subject, painting realistic art isn't cut out for everyone. As far the learning curve and skill is concerned, artists do what they wanna do.
Sorry, just felt I had to say something.

& too add once again.
Not only is realism the most hardest art form too work with. (You have too draw what you see. And if it's fictional, you have too use references of things that already exist too help aid you in bring something fictional, too life) But not 'everyone' prefers a cartoon-ish style over realism. Everyone has their different tastes. I mean really. Not everyone likes your favorite food. So saying "realism catches some people's eyes, but I think refined artists (not to sound shitty but) value a more stylized art because it is as original as the way somebody speaks, or their life journey, or what have you. " is greatly invalid. Creating ANYTHING fictional or putting pieces from reality into one whole, is original too me. Any artist drawing something realistic wont look the same next too another artist's realistic piece. Though CGI movies with the animated realism you see(take Avatar by James Cameron for example), weren't created by one person but many & they all needed too remain within 'one' look and feel throughout the entire movie too meet James expectations.
Something else I would like too add is people enjoy seeing something that is 'make-believe' look real. It makes a person go, 'Wow, it looks so real & even though it just can't possibly actually be real. What if it was. What if it is real some place else?' It gets a person's imagination running on endless possibilities. and truthfully, it makes a person more related too it because it looks like something that can fly onto your window balcony any moment and nip at your fingertips.
& too sum it up in an agreement with Ak. Yes, artists do what they wanna do. This is a critique; Advice you give someone too help improve what they already have rendered (color choice, form, detail, anatomy, etc.) Whatever style it's in. Not based on your personal likes/tastes of art. As an artist, I too had to say something. And there is nothing wrong standing up too what you believe in if you compose yourself in a respectable, manner. ~

My god, this is beautiful! It's like you've achieved just the right amount of realism. Depending on what you're trying to accomplish, you don't want too much (especially in the face) or you'll lose much of the owl's expression.
The only critique I can offer is that the wing looks a bit off. Their actual wings are somewhat thicker with more feathers, particularly on the outside. Additionally, a view of his opposite wing would improve the balance of the piece and add depth; you could have it slightly folded and faded to appear distant.
Otherwise, this is fantastic! Much better than I could do at my current level. I don't like to use the word talent, but I think you put a lot of thought and care into your work and it really shows.

While I am partial to the cuteness of your toony style, this is just beautiful and quite refreshing. I don't happen upon realistic art that I consider well done often, but I think you have done a fantastic job at this. I think this style also speaks from another side of you, a mostly silent but natural part of you. Honestly I would love to see Falvie portrayed in this style, I bet she would look amazing.
I can't tell you if this is a good direction or not, seeing as that is really a choice you should make, but you have indeed done well with an alternative drawing style. I look forward to seeing what path you take next. :3

omg this is stunning.
I love this too much.
About your art, well, in reality depends of your personal goal. Personally I like this art more than the more cartoony stuff, but that is just in the eye of the beholder and others could disagree. You have the skills, have the idea and you art nice.
btw, i loooove how you do fur. I tried to do it myself using your video for learning but i just fail. xD

great job Falvie, but don't leave your cartoon style behind! I love it a lot more... because it's just how I see you.
If you are looking for doing realism sometimes, this is great, but please keep up the more stylistic stuff. It is what always made me look up to you... and if I were to order something from an artist, I would want their own personal twist to it, not a photo.

You obviously know you don't have to pick just one style and do it forever like everybody on here seems to think.
This is a beautiful work of art and can easily bring in a whole other crowd of watchers if it already hasn't.
I enjoy the fact that I still write comments on your art. I should just get sticky notes and stick them to your door. :D
