“Al…” he began.
“Mmm?”
“Can you stop my heart?”
“You want to die?” she asked, her voice calm, though tinged with surprise.
“As if that’s news to you.”
“No, but… why now?”
He closed his eyes, and more tears rolled down his cheeks. His body trembled with sobs.
“I can’t do this anymore. I don’t want to. I just want it to stop.”
Alyx wrapped an arm around his head and lay down beside him, her nose touching his, her eyes gazing into his eyes.
“Tell me what’s wrong,” she whispered.
He winced, as if in pain.
“I hate everything I do. Every step I take. Every thought I have. I hate the way I sound in my own head. I hate my own existence. It hurts to know that tomorrow I’ll wake up and still be me.
If I could tear myself into pieces, I would. I don’t want to be around other people because I hate myself so much that I want to protect them from me. I feel dirty - broken. Like someone who should never have been born.” He looked her straight in the eyes, his face drenched in never-ending tears.
Sadness spread across her face. She was afraid that she wouldn’t be able to help him.
“Is there anything I can do for you to help?” she asked quietly. “Besides killing you. Believe me - I’ve been to Hell. It’s not a place worth rushing toward.”
Leo’s expression turned hopeless. He couldn’t bring himself to say the one thing he truly wanted. He felt trapped inside his own existence. Closing his eyes again, he wept even harder.
She exhaled sadly - unable to help him - and simply moved closer, wrapping her arms around him. As usual, she buried her nose in his hair, wishing with her whole being to share and ease his pain.

It's been a while, but the anwere was like "No, that would be inappropriate - there are better ways." (and the talk was over) But at least I managed the stuff with talking (or better listening. The poor guy was involved in a rescue-mission after a car-accident which gone a bit wrong and maked himself irrational self-reproaches later). Your bridge-picture was also interesting by the way - don't to pamper such people during the first phase is a very common approach
