Thursday Writing Prompt: 2025-10-09
My submission for the Thursday Writing Prompt.
The prompt was: "offset"
Another story from the Enclaves. More of a scene, really.
Writer's note: I'd originally written a much longer entry, following Cyraxis and Yesenia as they check on the rest of his Cohort. But the more I wrote, the more I realized that the first two pages presented a perfectly decent, tight little scene that carries some emotional weight. So I decided to submit that, instead. The other pages will make a good entry for another TWP submission.

Yep. Just barely enough, I think. To be honest, I'd planned to have a three-scene entry: Cy's moment of autonomy and sense of freedom when he first opens the doors to his hangar; Cy and Yesenia checking in on his Cohort (some still out of it, some awake but groggy); trying to get to sleep in his new hangar, and eventually deciding to sleep outside under the stars and a full moon, where he's joined by the rest of his Cohort (who can't sleep, either).
I'm thinking the "can't get to sleep" would make a good entry of around four pages, but I'm not sure.

Yep! Yesenia is a cool customer, though I imagine she probably takes some time to herself for a little decompression after a tough day.
One of the traits Stein Biotech looks for in their PEOs is a calm, focused personality, along with physical fitness and empathy / emotional intelligence. A PEO (later, dragon rider) is like a cross between a military test pilot and therapist.

Glad you liked it!
I really do need to work more on scenes, and not so much on the longer stuff.
Getting into Cy's headspace for that moment when he looks up at the sky... that was a tough one. It's something we take for granted, but in his case, it's literally the first time in his (new) life that's he's been able to do that on his own.
