The tradition is to give two weeks of advanced notice, but I have seldom seen a company honor this. I have met folks who wanted to work one more month, but they were given only three days to settle their work projects.
This also applies to all situations where you are exiting the company (e.g., firing, furlough).

"'Giving notice' is when you tell your employer that you are leaving your job. 9 times out of 10, the company will dictate your last day. It almost always aligns with the end of a pay period. Consider this when giving notice. If you do not time it well, they may push you out the door in the span of days just to make it easier for the payroll department."

I would also add if you are an at will employee, as nearly all workers in the us are, if you give your employer 2 weeks notice they are entirely within their rights to just say "actually, I'll just accept your resignation effective immediately instead" and have that be your last day. Ive seen that happen when the employment relationship was already strained.
