Alani Mailohi hails from the mysterious Pinkan Island located in the Orange Island chain, so named because of the mysterious pink fruit that grows there. In addition to a myriad of other effects, from the medicinal to the enhancement of natural abilities, the fruit has the side effect of changing the natural colors of those who ingest it pink. As the fruit is very valuable and only grows on Pinkan Island, the Rangers work diligently to protect the island as a preserve and keep poachers and thieves away. The only inhabitants of the island are a few native tribes, who live there peacefully away from the outside world.
While the native tribes are aware of the outside world, and are by no means primitives, they traditionally choose to keep to their own simple ways and ignore the world beyond their island. However, as with any culture, there will always be members of the youth who choose to go against tradition, and within her own tribe, Alani was just such a youth. As the daughter of her tribe's shaman and one of the tribal princes she was in a fine position to simply enjoy life on the island, but her natural curiosity would get the better of her. As she grew up Alani would hear stories of the world beyond her home and would ask the Rangers posted on the island for more and more information. While it was against their policy to interfere with the tribes, she was persistent and eventually they would open up.
She grew more and more aware and astute regarding the outside world but kept it secret from her parents, afraid they wouldn't approve. Eventually her inquiries were discovered and while her parents were initially upset, they couldn't fault her curiosity. Realizing that forbidding her from learning of such things would just make her even more determined, they instead elected to make the best of the situation and steer her curiosity into a more appropriate direction. Alani was taken on as a sort of apprentice to the Ranger she was closest with, who better prepared her for interaction with the world beyond the island. Using some of her contacts on the mainland, the Ranger made allowances to have Alani admitted to the PCA, which was suited to handling students with exotic and unusual backgrounds.
Alani, like several other students, intended to use the PCA's training to join the Rangers, figuring it was only fair to return the favor they had done for her tribe. Though definitely out of her element she's adapted quickly, and while many of the customs and ways of her fellow students are baffling, she's open-minded and eager to learn. The Ranger advised her to join a team once she enrolled, in order to help her assimilate, but Alani was clever enough to know she should be selective.
Now with a third team member in tow, the other members of Team Pink were on the lookout for a fourth, realizing that the one collective weakness they shared was a lack of significant ranged firepower. Ian spotted the giratina wandering around campus, lost, and thought it way too fitting. He approached and talked with her, learning that she was also a junior, with the skills his team was looking for. However she wasn't very enthusiastic, having already been offered the chance to join teams despite them knowing nothing about her. She figured if they asked her to join their team without even knowing if she was capable, the rest of the team could be just as random, and that idea didn't appeal to her.
Ian, while friendly, was still insistent on knowing what she was capable of, which caught her attention. He wanted to know how she fought, what her skills were, and while she remained skeptical his charm eventually won out. Following some sparring with the other team members she was asked to become the team's final member, an offer she accepted. Despite not really grasping the meaning of having a team full of 'mon all the same color, she's still enthusiastic and happy to have made friends quickly.
Alani may lack much of the focus and discipline that students with more experience at the academy possess, but she makes up for it with drive and intuition. She may be the physically weakest member of the team, but her special attacks pack a lot of power and she's adept at using some of her more unusual, ghostly abilities. She just can't figure out why so many 'mon look at her funny, like they've never seen a pink giratina before.
