The watching crowd held its breath, anticipation causing a few people to head for the staging area where the ambulances waited.

Displays and screens throughout the world showed the clock, and some began to count down. Others drank off whatever beverages they had in paw, and refilled their glasses.

That has to be the cleverest way to write a story that I have seen in a long, long time I have sometimes taken the EWO (Easy Way Out) by having a character look at a clock and counting down minutes or seeing time pass while unable to fall asleep, and once I even literally repeated an entire scene in a chapter by showing the exact same phonecall from the previous chapter, but from the other end of the line's point of view, but an entire actual countdown with the timestamps shown in between, I never thought of that, so, kudos! You gotta wonder what the announcement was that got everyone to the square, though... "Come see the biggest fireworks show ever!" maybe? >~_^<
