It was his duty to call upon his tribe the blessing of the gods before a battle. Each beat of his drum is a knock on the gates of the underworld, so that they'd open and allow the spirits of their ancestors to grant them their strength, or welcome the souls of the deceased among them should anyone fall on the battlefield.
