Unlucky no.13: Stingy Jack - Pumpkin Jack
You may not believe this, but for an annual tradition that I've been carrying on for nearly two decades, I'm fairly lackadaisical when it comes to my countdowns. That's not to say that I don't put tons of effort into not only drawing them, but also deciding who gets in in the first place. (Because I certainly do) What I mean is that their overall placement in said countdowns aren't 100% ironclad for me. I can't really say for certain that I feel one specific character truly outranks another within my own personal specifications. I don't sweat it THAT much. These are mostly for fun after all.
I do however have a few rules and rankings that I hold to personally when making these. I'm not always the best at keeping up with them, but that's besides the point. Who ranks in the Top Ten and Final Five, as well as Dead Last. These are all about as accurate as I can make them, and I try to never reuse a character from a previous countdown, save for special theming or if they're going to rank within the top 2 slots. Another that I try to give a special ranking to, if I can remember to do so, is no. 13. I feel, given the nature of Halloween, that the unlucky number should be given some kind of honorary spot for a character that most embodies it.
Well who better to do so than Stingy Jack, himself? The man who created Jack-o'-lanterns and embodies the Devil's Luck. For that alone he could win an entire countdown, but Stingy Jack is just one of those characters that's sort of doomed to never fully succeed, making him perfect as a weird honorary title bestowed upon him by some fuckwit on the Internet.
That aside, I chose to use Stingy Jack's depiction from the game, Pumpkin Jack, as it is both a great design and a game I very much enjoy. a little bare bones, but a great play for Halloween that embodies the spirit of both the holiday and gritty late 90's 3D platformers ala MidEvil. Definitely a must if you're looking for something for Spooky Month!
