The change of seasons brings the beautiful ambiance of autumn; the changing leaves, harvest festivals and of course the delicious fall treats. Both “By the Ounce” as well as Aurora’s small cottage home are fully decorated for the season with gourds and fall foliage.
Aurora sits in her kitchen at the small center island, perched on a stool, as the end of her tail taps gently on the ground. A mug of tea and a matching plate housing a pumpkin chocolate chip scone rest on the table beside her, both forgotten as she concentrates on her task. Several pieces of crumpled paper are scattered around her as she rips another page from her notebook with a huff and starts again with her letter to Prince Laurence.
After their afternoon of ice skating the previous winter, the pair made a point of visiting each other every few weeks. Their meetings were often simple, spending an afternoon in the gardens, reading together in his expansive library or a morning at her café. Yet these quiet moments the most meaningful to their growing companionship. Aurora quickly found she enjoyed his composed and quiet demeanor. There were many who thought him to be aloof or even cold, but Aurora found his presence to be quite peaceful and calming. She did still occasionally feel intimidated by his poise and grace, the clear training of royalty, that she simply did not possess.
Holding the letter up to read it over for any grammatical mistakes.
‘Dear Laurence,
I hope my letter finds you well on this chilly Autumn day.
With the change of seasons, the fall foliage is beautifully changing color, and there are many seasonal goods just waiting to be harvested and enjoyed.
If you would be so inclined, I wish to invite you to join me for an afternoon of apple picking.
Please send me your response, so we may find a day that suits us both
Aurora’
Satisfied with her letter, she turns to the windowsill. “You ready cookie?”
Preening its feathers patiently awaiting it next task, “cookie” the fluffy pigeon perches on a small swing right inside the windowsill. The bird’s presence had quickly grown on Aurora when it would visit to deliver or retrieve letters. To make its’ wait a little more comfortable, she built a little shelf on the sill with a swing perch and a small birdbath, frequently used in the warmer months. The pigeon gives a small coo and flutters over to her. She rolls the letter so it can fit in the little leather harness she had made for him, to make it easier to carry their message. With the letter securely in place she opens the window and the pigeon takes flight.

A few days Later, Aurora stood outside her abode, a long scarf wrapped around her to keep away the blustery Autum chill. Resting at her feet is a small stack of empty wooden bushel baskets. She bounces on her toes in excitement to see where Laurence is planning on taking her. While she initiated the plan to go apple picking, in his reply Laurance stated he had the perfect location in mind.
The clopping of hooves announced the arrival of the carriage. The coachman, stopping the carriage in front of her, hops down from the front and gives a reverent bow before opening the door to allow her to step inside. Laurence sits poised on the plush velvet seats within and offers Aurora a hand as she steps into the carriage to take the seat across from him. As she settles in, she finds herself straightening her posture just a bit to match his.
“So where are you taking us?” She asks as the coachman loads her bushel baskets into the storage compartment and leads the carriage away from her home. Looking across the small space, she sees the deer is well dressed for the cooler weather. A long ornately decorated, fur lined coat is draped over his frame with a matching scarf and gloves. He simply gives a smile “I wish to keep its location a surprise, but trust me it is a place I know you will adore.” and declined to reveal any secrets further.
The ride is fairly short as Laurence’s manor can be seen in the distance, this secret location clearly not far from home for the deer but far enough that he had never taken her there before. The carriage stopped at a small forested path and the door opened to allow the pair to exit before the coachman gave another nod and returned to the front seat to wait.
Before she could fully exit the carriage, Laurence stood in front of her with a small wrapped bundle. As he spoke in, she could have sworn his cheeks were tinged ever so slightly pink. “I was given the opportunity to deliver you this myself. I was told to keep this one a secret but you already know who it is from”, He left to give her the privacy to change before she could respond and the laid the package down on the seat to carefully inspect the contents. A beautiful laced bodice, long overcoat, scarf and ribbon to tie her hair back all laid within the wrappings. Picking up the fabric she could already tell it would be quite warm, but not too warm for her naturally fluffy build. the overcoat and bow were soft to the touch. she also quickly noticed the outfit matched Laurence's new outfit with hints of gold, but not as ornately designed as his, just as she would prefer. She could tell alot of thought and consideration were put into its design.Fully changed, she stepped out of the carriage and gave a little twirl to show how the scarf and ribbon accented her nimbleness.
With her bushels in tow, Laurence led the pair down the unassuming path until they reached a small bend. Upon rounding the bend, the forest seemed to take on a magical feel, like passing through a ripple of water. Small lanterns with bouncing lights dotted along the trees filled with the fiery colors of fall. Mushrooms of all types and sizes lined the tree, bushes ladened with plump, juicy berries. Large pumpkins rested along heavy stalks, their skin perfectly orange and beautiful for carving and cooking. And finally, Aurora looked up to see the overabundance of apples hanging from the trees above, deep red skins hiding their ripe flesh. Dropping the bushels, Aurora took several steps forward and slowly spun on her heels to immerse herself further within the magical forest surrounding her. After a few moments she turned to face him, completely mesmerized. “Laurence this place is incredible! Thank you for bringing me here.” she turned to face him, completely mesmerized before reaching up with little jumps to begin picking apples, many of which were far too high for her smaller frame to reach.
With lithe steps Laurence closed the distance between them, walking up behind Aurora and wrapping his long arms around her waist in a warm embrace “you are quite welcome my dear, and thank you for making every moment special” his baritone voice rumbling as he spoke. Almost dropping an apple, Aurora freezes in surprise at the embrace. As an affectionate individual, Aurora was rarely known to turn down small affections such as these. But the conversation with Laurence had yet to be broached and she never wished to overstep or make him uncomfortable. Her brain quickly caught up and she returns the gesture. A gentle purr completing the quiet moment, her heart filled with happiness that he took the first step.
Releasing her from the hug and stepping back, he smiles “Here let me help you with these, and I will make sure you get a few pumpkins too.” Laurence reaches up to pick one of the large apples from a high branch and they work to collect as much of the fall harvest as she wishes.
