'Sabrina The Animated Series' early production art.
In the animation process there is pre-production art - development and presentation - which will sometimes have character models sheets and some samples of what the show will look like. i did lotsa that stuff, but not on Sabrina.
When i was brought onboard the series was starting production. There were model sheets and scripts. Giving a stiff model sheet turn to storyboard/layout/animation artists is a recipe for stiff/lifeless poses. One of my fave things to do early on in production id do expression and poses pages that bring the design to life for the first time. These pages will then be included in the series model pack. Sometimes a board artist will actually copy a pose or expression.
i did expressions and poses on Sabrina, Zelda, and Gem. And then did a bunch of storyboards once the series was in full production.
...
i put this page together just now and originally i just wanted it to have a toned background but while foodling around with light outlines it ended up being a glow fx. Sabrina The Teen Age Witch Ghost ? idk
1998

Some of the pics are shockingly off-model as these were just intended as rough poses or the studio was going to have an assistant do clean versions - both are common practices and i don't recall which was the case here. Study the rotation model sheet for a few minutes, take a few measurements, and start drawing.
i got to do a lot of fun stuff during my time in the biz !
The money was good but the hours when i went freelance were way too long (14 hrs a day 7 days a week at a desk; feel like taking a short walk? You'll lose 100 bucks - get back to work - deadlines that required a 50 hr sleepless grind - and no time to do your own art - what free time i had i spent with my kids - forget about your own art).
So i'm much happier now. A part-time day job pays the bills and i get to draw whatever i want to. But there were times in the biz when i was like "Pinch-me!" cuz i couldn't believe i was getting paid to have fun !!!

The glowing thing is a bit weird ... fifteen Sabrina light bulbs ... but it's also sort of weird cool ... but distracting ... idk ... it might trigger overthinking for some people ... maybe a nice calm background with no glowing effect would be more soothing ... but who am i to decide which version of a picture is better? ... so i post the glowing version ... but ...
oh...sorry , i thought that was a question - a speck of dust on my monitor made the ! look like a ?
