Concept sketches for a Halloween gargoyle illustration, here's hoping I'll get it done in time!
I want this guy to still look kinda natural so I started by basing them off real animals. First is based on baboons and the second was based on rhinos/paraceratherium.
I liked the stony and pebbly texture from the second idea but I can't imagine it clambering up old ruined castles, so the third sketch is a combination of both. I think it feels more like a typical gargoyle while hopefully looking more natural.
I'll probably go with something along the lines of the third for the final. Heavily armored but still quite agile.

Ohhhh I absolutely love these designs!! The anatomy and the details on their skin make them look so real and grounded, while also still unique and magical! I do like the agile version a bit more and I think it's more recognisable as a gargoyle overall, while the rhino-based version could've easily been a relative to a unicorn or something similar
