Original Species: Tree-Hammer Juggernaut
When I think I can try something else, Shangrila pulls me back in... wyvern time again.
The Tree-Hammer Juggernaut is a large herbivorous wyvern that inhabits sparse woodlands at the border between the forested and grassy areas. This species has some of the most peculiar feeding habits of all wyvenrs. It uses its massive, hammer-like tail to topple trees and crush them into pulp. Once the wood is pulverized, the Tree-Hammer will then leave the area for a few days, letting insects, mosses, and fungi break down the wood. When it returns to the area, it will then eat the wood along with everything on it.
This behavior is crucial for maintaining sparsely wooded forests. The Tree-Hammer sustains a constant cycle of new growth and is therefore an environmental engineer. Without it, transitional areas between grasslands and jungles would not exist; the same goes for all the different species that inhabit this particular biome.
Researchers have noted other behaviors of the Tree-Hammer Juggernaut. It has also been seen digging through soil in search of roots and tubers. This wyvern has a surprisingly varied diet for such a specialized creature.
The best way to describe this animal's role in the ecosystem is a mix of a boar, a beaver, and a bison all rolled into one.
When threatened by a predator, the Tree-Hammer will stand firm on the ground, and attempt to use its tree-breaking tail slams on the foe's legs… or head. Few carnivorous wyverns are bold enough to even consider attacking this living tank.
Mating habits and social structure have yet to be observed in earnest, as this species was discovered fairly recently.
Before anyone points it out: yes, I was inspired by Duramboros from Monster Hunter when making this creature. The video made by the Unnatural History channel and the speculative behavior within were the most noteworthy in terms of influence. All I can hope for is that I made this guy different enough (at least visually) to stand on its own.
One thing I can tell for sure, is that this guy doesn't spin around like a beyblade when fighting off predators. That would be way too blatant.
