Within days of me completing their portrait, I wanted to give the Cat in My Phone a body, an outfit and a name. And so I started this piece on my phone in Pixquare during my breaks at work. After work ended, I continued using Pixquare to draw this not just during my breaks but at home, because the only way to train yourself to use a program is by using it! After four days, the cat became Alex Graham (they/them), evidently pleased by their new form.
As with the portrait, I drew this as a 16-color "fantasy EGA" image with square pixels and presumed access to the full 64-color IBM EGA palette in a lower resolution than the 640×350 mode you can use it in, this time on a full-screen 4:3 canvas instead of a tiny square. I also drew it without outlines again, and thus I chose a color scheme for the outfit that would prevent parts of the design from blending into each other. Without the fine degree of control I would have on my desktop computer in Aseprite, I used the spraypaint tool to create the glowing effect. For the same reason, I used a dithering brush for the first time, but not in the way you're "supposed" to use it: I drew the streaking background by swiping my finger diagonally across the canvas with that brush to ensure the lines would never meet, and because using the line tool to make them would not have allowed me to draw them in such a quick and natural fashion.
Drawn October 23-27, 2025.
