It was early morning, a few weeks after the all-nighter, and Racheal was in the kitchen cooking bacon and scrambled eggs. The smell filled the air as she hummed softly to herself. Just as she was about to flip the bacon, her phone started ringing.
She glanced over and saw the caller ID — Mom. Smiling, she used her tail to swipe the answer button and set it on speaker.
“Hello, Mama!” she greeted cheerfully, plating the eggs.
“Hey, sugarpomeg! How are you doing?” came the warm, familiar voice on the other end.
Racheal grinned. “Doing fine, Mom. Just made some breakfast and getting ready to start the day! What’s new on your end?”
“Oh, the same old,” her mom replied. “Your father’s busy at the precinct, and I’m prepping for the family reunion in a few weeks. Speaking of—are you bringing that boyfriend of yours? The whole family’s been buzzing about him!”
Racheal nearly choked on her juice. She coughed, setting the glass down as her ears flicked back. “Oh—uh—I don’t know. I haven’t had him meet you guys yet, and it’s still kind of early in the relationship. Maybe next year’s reunion?”
There was a pause on the line, long enough to make Racheal nervous. Then came her mother’s familiar, stern voice.
“Racheal Anabelle Winston, don’t tell me you’re embarrassed to have him meet the family.”
Racheal groaned softly and rubbed her temple, setting her fork down. “It’s not that, Momma. I just don’t wanna overwhelm him with everyone all at once. Especially if you or Auntie Natalie get your paws on him—your hugs alone might break his spine. And don’t even get me started on Dad and his brothers. I can already picture the interrogation.”
Her mom sighed on the other end, the sound halfway between exasperation and amusement. “Well, how about this—why don’t we invite him to dinner first? Just me and your father. A smaller meet-and-greet to ease him in. He can bring his family too if that helps.”
Racheal hesitated, then gave a small gulp. “Okay, Mom. I’ll ask him and see how he feels. I’m actually meeting up with him today, so… we’ll see.”
“Perfect! I’ll be waiting to hear back from you. See ya later, Feraligatr!”
“After a while, Krookodile,” Racheal replied automatically with a smile.
When the call ended, she slumped forward, pressing her tail to her face and letting out a muffled scream into the fluff.
Looked like it was going to be a stressful day.
