Yah know, you could use this to make Zebra cookies too!
So I know I promised a couple people back when I made the red white and blue cookies that I would make a little walkthrough on how to do them, so I finally am doing that today! Quite a bit late, about a month, but a month late better than never? My apologies on the lateness of it!
This is how to do some simple cookie rolls with a bit of color, you can of course color (And flavor if desired) your cookie dough differently for your favorite holiday or special occasion. The Technique will be the same regardless, and you can also do larger ones than I did with more stripes if you like.
A. Make up a batch of sugar cookie dough. I recommend a dough that works well for cookie cutouts for this, you’ll find it easier to work with. Split the dough into four pieces. Take one piece back into the bowl with a little bit of red coloring, mix as little as possible to incorporate the color. Wipe clean bowl of any excess color and do the same for the blue color in a piece. Combine the other two plain cookie dough into a single ball.
B. With your colored balls and plain ball wrap all in plastic and allow to chill for at least a couple of hours in the refrigerator.
C. Remove your balls and split each piece into thirds. Keep one third of each ball out and return the others to the chill chest.
D. Roll out the plain dough onto a lightly floured piece of wax paper and into a rectangle about a quarter of an inch thick at most. It’s okay to trim the dough to make it squared off. Split the colored dough into halves and then roll into long snakes the length of the sugar cookie rectangle.
E. Use a little flour if the dough is sticky, and you can apply a little water if the dough is cracking to much. Place alternating, with some space between,
F. Using the Wax paper lift up and gently press the plain cookie to the colored snake. Then gently roll, pushing down often to make sure to not have any air bubbles and making sure the roll is tight.
G. Roll and seal the seam with a little water. Wrap in the Wax paper and return to the chill chest for an hour while you prepare the other rolls. Continue them the same as the first. Any leftover dough can be rolled into fun little things and baked as well.
H. Once dough is chilled again remove from paper roll and slice into thin slices. Place on a baking sheet and top with a little sugar. Bake for about eight to ten minutes at 350 degrees, just until the edges are firmed up and slightly turning.
Serve on a platter and enjoy a festively colored treat!
