The punchline in this strip is based on a joke I've seen in images on Know Your Meme showing Lyra (the pony who sits funny on benches) wishing she had hands.

KT, you can't just clone a gear and shrink it down! The teeth don't mesh!

EDIT: You people have NEVER heard of finger sandwiches??!!?? Also known as tea sandwiches, they're small sandwiches eaten as a snack at teatime!

That picture of her with fingers is even freakier.

And nope, gear teeth have match in size. That's why bigger and smaller gears have different numbers of teef. Bicycle chainrings are the same way.

My mom once made finger sandwiches for a picnic. They consisted of white bread, cream cheese, and smoked salmon.

I no what finger sandwiches are. I've personally never eaten them in said teatime situation, but I like to cut my sandwiches into smaller parts so that I can enjoy them longer. ^_^
