The air whistled around her bare ankles and feet and made her beautiful silver dress dance wildly. The snow fell almost sideways, so the soft white substance mixed with her crystal tears; it nearly hid them. Selena stood on the edge of a fancy lookout of the house that she had been taken to for a dinner party. No one knew where she had run off to; perfect chance. The heels of her very uncomfortable formal shoes, the best ones she had, clicked against the French style railing and she leaned farther over the edge than a sane person at that party would ever dare. The night air greeted her even more and blew parts of her hair from its excruciatingly tight bun. She welcomed the cold bitterness that was the winter chill, after all, it was far warmer than what she had ever received in any embrace or any word or thought from anyone she knew, if she ever received them at all, not even her self-proclaimed fiancé could say slightly more.
The pain inside her heart screamed its frustration and she lurched in hauntingly real agony; a little further forward, and she would’ve personally met the house’s frost-covered lawn, but she didn’t care, none of it mattered anymore. She was forcefully engaged to a very rich, pompous snob and was told that being married to him would make her life absolutely flawless, she would be living the dream that every girl envies to have. Unfortunately, she wasn’t like other girls, she did not want to wear the finest clothing money could buy, she didn’t want to live the normal rich life of civilized party after civilized bloody party, she wanted to live her own way and have her own choices that she could make, and she very well wasn’t going to get that where she was. There was no other way to escape it, no place to run to, because even if she tried, her family was so well-known, she would be returned in a heartbeat, and if they didn’t know her, she wouldn’t last very long as a free person anyway, women were property, not people.
No other option was as clear in her mind as the one she was ready and willing to perform, so she continued to lean farther and farther to her only escape. She suddenly stopped and took a tight grip on the railing, it had looked like a shadow had passed over the white surface of the front lawn, but she knew it had to have been her imagination, not a soul in this house would be so uncivilized to come out in this weather, so she shook it from her mind and proceeded. The edge of the lookout went farther and farther away from her vision, then her hands quickly slipped from their grip and she fainted before she could hit the ground.
