The iconic 80's toy is now 40. Invented by the late Ken Forsse and released by Worlds of Wonder, Teddy Ruxpin made his debut in 1985. At the time, the idea of an animatronic toy that can read stories (via a cassette deck) was a novel concept, and became an instant hit with children everywhere. His signature song, "Come Dream With Me Tonight" still gives me goosebumps when I hear it to this day. Phil Baron's soothing vocals are quite amazing!
And yes, I had one of my very own as a child. Although I wasn't born until 1986, I got one for Christmas 1988 (according to some home movies I watched) and I was immediately obsessed. I even had VHS tapes of the animated series and watched them on constant repeat during my toddler/early youth days.
Teddy's been by friend for as long as I can remember. And I'm very glad to be celebrating his 40th Anniversary.
Special thanks to Sean from Back in Time Collectibles for letting me borrow his Teddy Ruxpin for this photo!
