I started playing the Pokémon Crystal Clear ROM hack just yesterday, and among its many features was one where you can inject your own sprites into the game to create a totally custom trainer. Now, I'm not a pixel artist, but I know my way around Krita and have a half-abandoned copy of Aseprite, so a few hours later I had a full compliment of sprites for a self-insert trainer.
I'm pretty pleased with the result!
