the pixel artstyle has kind of obsolete the brush but hasn't obscured it entirely

I think both look neat.
Though, you could also just use the brush tool at a higher resolution / at the same resolution as the final image. :p
That should look similar to the flash animations you did.

i use drawpile but the problem is i draw with the brush the same size as the pixel pen which would probably be why they're always so blurry, crusty lookin'
though i guess it wouldn't be too different to draw generally with flash

I‘m not familiar with drawpile, but it would be a surprise to me if it only offers a 1px brush size. Drawing with a larger brush and exporting directly from the program should prevent it from looking crusty.

I mean there is a style that takes both of them (sorta). It's like do a shading to the right one. I can see why is hard to decide tho, I like both
